CLASS IX

SUBJECT : MATHEMATICS

GIST OF THE LESSON (PROBABILITY)


1. Experiment: An experiment means an operation which can produce
some well defined outcomes. There are two types of experiments:(i)
deterministic and (ii) random or probabilistic
2. Trial: performing an experiment is called a trial.
3. Event: the results or outcomes of an experiment are called events.
4. Event space or sample space: the collection of all outcomes of an
experiment is called the event space or the sample space of that
experiment.
5. Events are of two types : simple and compound
6. The event A ̅ , read as “complement of A” or “not A” is said to occur
when and only when A does not occur.
7. An event is called an impossible event if it cannot occur at any
performance of the experiment.
8. Two events are called equally likely if none of them can be expected
to occur in preference to the other.
9. An event is called a sure event if it is obvious to occur at any
performance of the experiment.
10. Empirical or Experimental Probability of an event E is given by
Number of trials in which the event A has occurred

1) Explain the error in each of the following statement:


i) The probability that Dilip will pass the competitive examination is
0.8 and will not be able to pass is – 0.2.
ii) The probability that our school team will win the badminton match
is 0.67, lose the game is 0.31 and probability of a tie is 0.05.

2) Name the following:


i) An experiment which when performed produces one of the
several possible outcomes.
ii) A collection of all possible outcomes of a random experiment.

3) A student does not know the correct answer of a certain question. The
probability of guessing the correct answer of that question is x/3. If the
probability of not guessing the correct answer is x/5, then find x.

4) In a football match, Messi scores 4 goals from 5 penalty kicks. What is


the probability of Messi missing a goal?

5) Three coins are tossed simultaneously 500 times with the following
frequencies of different outcomes.

6) A coin is tossed 1000 times and if the probability of getting a tail is 3/8,

9) A recent survey found that the ages of 200 workers in a factory is

12) Each of 10 students were asked to write a 3-digit number and the
following numbers were obtained:
436, 790, 900, 253, 184, 873, 279, 556, 524, 916
A number is chosen at random.
What is the probability that the chosen number is divisible by 4?

13) An insurance company selected 2000 drivers at random in a particular


city to find a relationship between the age of drivers and accidents. The
data obtained are given in the following table:

Find the probability of the following events for a driver chosen at random:
