Module 6 Worksheet 1
Ethics in Research

Learning Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this module, students will be able to
1. Explain ethical consideration.

2. Discuss the importance of ethical consideration in research.

3. Enumerate examples of ethical consideration in research.

Lecture Notes:
Ethics searches for reasons for acting or refraining from acting; for approving or not approving
conduct; for believing or denying something about virtuous or vicious conduct or good or evil
rules.
Ethical considerations can be addressed at individual and at societal levels.
Ethical Considerations can be specified as one of the most important parts of the research.
According to Bryman and Bell (2007) the following ten points represent the most important
principles related to ethical considerations in dissertations:

1. Research participants should not be subjected to harm in any ways whatsoever.

2. Respect for the dignity of research participants should be prioritized.
3. Full consent should be obtained from the participants prior to the study.
4. The protection of the privacy of research participants has to be ensured.
5. Adequate level of confidentiality of the research data should be ensured.
6. Anonymity of individuals and organizations participating in the research has to be
ensured.
7. Any deception or exaggeration about the aims and objectives of the research must be
avoided.
8. Affiliations in any forms, sources of funding, as well as any possible conflicts of interests
have to be declared.
9. Any type of communication in relation to the research should be done with honesty and
transparency.
10. Any type of misleading information, as well as representation of primary data findings in
a biased way must be avoided.

Research ethics are important for a number of reasons. They promote the aims of research,
such as expanding knowledge. They support the values required for collaborative work, such as
mutual respect and fairness. ... They support important social and moral values, such as the
principle of doing no harm to others.

Activities / Exercises to Practice, Apply, and Synthesize:

Answer the questions completely. Use another sheet of coupon bond if needed.

1. What is research ethics?

Ethics are broadly the set of rules, written and unwritten, that govern our expectations of our
own and others’ behaviour. Effectively, they set out how we expect others to behave, and why.
While there is broad agreement on some ethical values (for example, that murder is bad), there
is also wide variation on how exactly these values should be interpreted in practice.

Research ethics are the set of ethics that govern how scientific and other research is performed
at research institutions such as universities, and how it is disseminated. According to Resnick
(2015), Research ethics are important for a number of reasons.

 They promote the aims of research, such as expanding knowledge.

 They support the values required for collaborative work, such as mutual respect and
fairness. This is essential because scientific research depends on collaboration between
researchers and groups.
 They mean that researchers can be held accountable for their actions. Many
researchers are supported by public money, and regulations on conflicts of interest,
misconduct, and research involving humans or animals are necessary to ensure that
money is spent appropriately.
 They ensure that the public can trust research. For people to support and fund research,
they have to be confident in it.
 They support important social and moral values, such as the principle of doing no harm
to others.

2. Why is ethical consideration important in research?

 Ethical Considerations can be specified as one of the most important parts of the
research. They can be addressed at individual and at societal levels.
 Ethics is a vital consideration in every aspect of research, right from what and whom
you choose to study, to how you manage and utilize the data, to how you publish and
communicate your research. Research with human subjects involves the greatest
amount of consideration, as you need to be cognizant of issues regarding people’s
health, safety, and identity (that is, confidentiality of information). However, research
with non-human subjects or things involves its own set of considerations. As a
researcher, you need to be aware of these considerations and take the necessary

measures at every step so that the ethics are not compromised, and if they are, to
ensure they can be quickly and satisfactorily addressed.

3. Give five (5) examples ethical consideration in research.

According to Bryman and Bell (2017), the following represent the most important principles
related to ethical considerations in dissertations:

 Anonymity of individuals and organizations participating in the research has to be

ensured.
 Any deception or exaggeration about the aims and objectives of the research must be
avoided.
 Affiliations in any forms, sources of funding, as well as any possible conflicts of interests
have to be declared.
 Any type of communication in relation to the research should be done with honesty and
transparency.
 Any type of misleading information, as well as representation of primary data findings in
a biased way must be avoided.
