1. Why is the 19th century considered as the most colorful part in Philippine history? What is the impact of the different events that shaped the Philippine historical sequence?
Explain your answer.
The 19th century is the most colorful part of our history because it is in this time when the Filipinos had suffered from feudalistic and master slave relationship by the Spaniards. Not only that, it is in this century when the Filipinos started to develop a strong feeling of nationalism. The transition of the country's traditional societal structure to colonial bureaucracy brought about the awareness of the local inhabitants to their common source of anxiety and suffering. Unknowingly, the Spanish government planted the seed of nationalism by creating poverty and injustice among the lower classes of society. Several events that happened gave way for the emergence of the Filipino sense of nationhood. One event would be the opening of our country to the World Commerce wherein we had an influx of liberal ideas such as John Locke’s theory of revolution and Jean Jacques Rousseau’s Social Contract Theory. Because of this, Filipino intellectuals started to investigate at the deplorable conditions of the country. Another event would be the Cavite Mutiny of 1872. Because of the events that happened within this mutiny, Filipinos started to realize the need for unity to end their miseries. 2. Explain the qualities of Rizal. Which among the factors you consider has a large impact on Rizal’s nationalism? Jose Rizal possessed three qualities – open-minded, intelligent, and hardworking. First, he is open-minded because he is aware of the sufferings of his countrymen under the Spaniards. He is also intelligent because of his numerous education attainments and achievements. He is a painter, a doctor, a writer, a sculptor, and many more. He also holds a lot of degrees such as Philosophy and Letters and Medicine. Finally, he is hardworking because he sees to it that his agenda of giving awareness to the Filipinos about their suffering is achieved. This is greatly manifested when he finished his two great novels – Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo. Among the three qualities, I can say that him being open-minded gave a large impact on his nationalism. Being aware of how his countrymen suffered, he made us of his intelligence to battle against the Spaniards, and that is through paper and pen. He didn’t use violence to combat the oppressors, and I think this is what makes him unique from other Filipino heroes.
