Index
General
H&M has with concern for the health of customers as well as for the environment and
working conditions, established H&M Chemical Restrictions for all products.

H&M Chemical Restrictions consist of eleven parts:

Part 1: Manufacturing Restricted Substances List (MRSL)
Part 2: Packaging
Part 3: Apparel/Accessories/Footwear/Soft Products
Part 4: Cosmetic Products
Part 5: Food Contact Products
Part 6: Candles
Part 7: Hard Products
Part 8: Chemical Products
Part 9: Toys
Part 10: Electrical and Electronic Products
Part 11: Medical Devices

Part 2, 3, 5 and 7 are divided into materials. The restrictions in Part 3 also apply to
Part 9 and 11 product types. The restrictions in Part 7 also apply to Part 5 and 6
product types. If the product is sold in a packaging, it must also comply with part 2. All
products must comply with Part 1. Each limit in H&M Chemical Restrictions is valid for
homogeneous parts of the concerned product if not otherwise stated.

Individual restricted substances with CAS no are specified in Appendix A.

All details on your product must comply with H&M Chemical Restrictions, see example
below. The examples do not claim to be complete.

By accepting H&M Standard Purchase Conditions, the Supplier commits to comply with
H&M Chemical Restrictions. It is the Supplier’s responsibility to assure compliance with
H&M Chemical Restrictions and to inform all their downstream suppliers and
subcontractors about the content of H&M Chemical Restrictions.

By accepting H&M Standard Purchase Conditions, each Supplier acknowledges that

H&M reserves the right to:

Inspect and test any product, any part of production and/or packaging, by any
listed or appropriate method, at any time or at any stage of production.

Cancel the Order, or, if the products are already delivered, return the products
to the Supplier if the product, production and/or packaging do not correspond to
the H&M Chemical Restrictions.

Hold the Supplier responsible for any damage caused by the ordered product if
the product, production and/or packaging do not correspond to the H&M
Chemical Restrictions.

Receive the Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for all substances and preparations (dyes,
colorants, solvents, chemicals etc.) used in the production of a specific Order.

In the case of contradictory test results, H&M test result will prevail.

Definitions

Concentration Limit The substance must not be present in the product at

concentrations above this limit.

Not Detected The substance must not be present in the finished product at
concentrations above the analytical reporting limit.

Usage Ban The substance must not be used in production and it must not
be added to the product.2

Homogeneous Uniform composition throughout, i.e. a material that cannot be

mechanically disjointed into different materials.

Kinematic viscosity Describes how fast a fluid is spread on a flat surface in relation
to its mass, i.e. weight.

Organoleptic Refers to any sensory property of a product, including smell,

taste, colour and feel.

2
Impurities at low concentrations of these substances may be accepted only if technically unavoidable
due to e.g. raw materials, formation in the manufacturing process, storage or packaging.

chain, e.g. Azo Dyes and Phthalates.
- H&M policy decisions e.g. PFC and Sandblasting.

Clause 1: Substances are not allowed to be found in H&M production sites and used in H&M
production

Clause 2: Substances are not allowed to be used in H&M production.

Glass & Crystal

Restriction / Requirement

For children (0-14 years):

Glass or Crystal may not be used in baby’s and children’s wear according to the “H&M
Safety Requirements for baby’s and children’s wear size 44-170 cl”

For adults:
Glass or Crystal that exposes humans to unsafe amounts of Lead (Pb), considering worst case
scenario, i.e. if swallowed, may not be used.

Recycled Material

For recycled materials51, the restrictions are the same as for other materials, with below
mentioned exceptions. These exceptions are only valid for orders where H&M explicitly specify
on the product that recycled material is used.

Restricted Substance/Material Details of exception

Alkylphenol Ethoxylates / Provided that no additional APEO has been used

Alkylphenols (APEO/AP) * after the collection of the waste, the APEO-
restriction does not apply.
Cationic Surfactants* Provided that no additional restricted Cationic
Surfactants have been used after the collection
of the waste, the restriction about Cationic
Surfactants does not apply.
Chloroparaffins

Short chained (SCCPs) C10-C13 1000 ppm

Medium chained (MCCPs) C14-C17 Provided that no additional MCCPs have been
used after the collection of the waste, the
restriction about MCCPs does not apply.
Metals, Total Amount

Chromium (Cr) Provided that no additional Chromium dyes have

been used after the collection of the waste, the
restriction about total Chromium does not apply.
The restriction for extractable Chromium applies,
regardless of waste type.
Perfluorinated Compounds (PFCs)* Provided that no additional restricted PFCs have
been used after the collection of the waste, the
restriction about PFCs does not apply.

51
Recycled materials is both pre- and post-consumer waste defined as follows:
• Pre-consumer waste: The reintroduction of manufacturing scrap, such as waste from textile production,
back into the yarn manufacturing process.
• Post-consumer waste: A waste produced by the end consumer of a material stream such as used PET
bottles or worn out garments.
