Term Project

CE5314 Advanced Steel Design II Fall 2020

Design simple, moment, and column base connections for the specified members and loads using
LRFD. A992 steel for column and beam; A36 steel for plates except for the end-plate of the extended
end-plate connection which is A572 Gr. 50. Each student is assigned two moment connections, two
simple connections, and one column base connection.

1. Design moment Connections (non-seismic), including column stiffening design.

Table 1
FR Moment Connection Type
1 Directly-welded flange connection
2 Flanged-plated (welded) connection
3 Flanged-plated (bolted) connection
4 Flange Tee-stub (bolted) connection
5 Extended end-plate connection

2. Design simple connections for the simply supported W24´ 55 beam shown in Figure 1. The left
end of the beam is connected to the web of a W12´ 96 column through an extended single-plate
connection. The right end of the beam is connected to the flange of a W12´ 96 column through a
double-angle connection (welded or bolted). Beam span is 30 ft. Assume that a uniformly
distributed factored gravity load (self-weight + dead + live) of wu kips/ft and a factored
concentrated load Pu 5-ft from the beam end are applied on the beam.

Figure 1

3. Design a column base connection for the specified column and loads. Bending is about the strong
axis of the wide-flange column. Conservatively consider the ratio of the concrete to base plate area
is unity. Fy of the base plate is 36 ksi and f c of concrete is 4 ksi. Determine the dimension of the
base plate, anchor rod size, and shear transfer strength (bearing or shear lug).

†Column section can be changed. Assume column is an exterior column with beam framing into
the joint from one side. Axial load in the column is 400 kips. Neglect the effect of story shear for
calculation purposes.

Notes:

 Make reasonable assumptions for any information you consider needed but not provided.
 In the final report please show the details of each design and shop drawings (AutoCAD or
MicroStation drawings) with appropriate welding symbols, as well as Sketchup drawings of all
your assigned connections.
 The final report (electronic copy) for the term project is due on Tuesday December 8. Please
submit the report and the Sketchup drawings to me electronically.
