    ABOUT THE AUTHOR

    Kamalakar R. Patil, presently heads the Sugar Engineering Division in Vasantdada


    Sugar Institute (VSI), Pune. While at the helm of sugar engineering division, he
    contributed immensely in Design & Development and need based R & D activities
    encompassing all the fields in sugar engineering, technical consultancy for sugar
    industry implementation, training and education. He has been associated with the
    sugar industry for last 35 years and occupies a unique position to guide sugar
    industry in modern and upcoming technologies. With his dedicated involvement and
    pursuance, VSI has been instrumental in assisting sugar mills to establish
    cogeneration projects successfully and help mills to derive financial benefit through
    export of power.

    Mr. Patil, born on 9th December 1955, comes from a small village called Pilode
    (Bk.) in Jalgaon district in the family with agricultural background. He graduated in
    Mechanical Engineering in June 1979 and acquired Masters Degree in Mechanical
    Engineering (Design) by research in May 1997 both with first class with distinction
    from the most renowned Government College of Engineering, Pune (Maharashtra,
    India). He possesses Diploma in Business Management and Masters in Business
    Administration both first class with distinction from Institute of Management
    Development & Research, Pune (Maharashtra, India).

    The author has been an official member on various Government committees


    and an associate member of prestigious organizations such as Institute of Engineers,
    Sugar Technologists’ Association of India (STAI), Deccan Sugar Technologists’
    Association (DSTA) and South Indian Sugar Technologists' Association (SISSTA). He
    has also visited USA, Brazil, Australia, Mauritius, Switzerland, Italy, France, Czech
    Republic, Sudan, Uganda, and Austria for seminars and conferences.

    For his outstanding contribution in the field of sugar engineering, he was


    conferred with Best Scientist Award in the 2000 by the Institute, VSI. He was
    awarded Gold Medal for his research paper “Energy efficient approach for surface
    condenser in cogeneration” in August 2008 and again a Gold Medal for research
    paper “Bagasse drying by using boiler flue gas” in August 2009 by STAI. In addition,
    Mr. Patil received number of awards from other organizations associated with
    sugar industry. He has presented and published more than thirty technical research
    papers on various topics like cogeneration, energy audit, energy measurement,
    energy conservation, vibration engineering, technical efficiency, effect of electrical
    harmonics, cane diffuser, modeling of sugarcane mill, lubrication engineering etc. at
    various forums and is reckoned as a technical authority in bagasse based
    cogeneration.

    The author having an inseparable association with the sugar industry, has
    acquired and developed deep technical insights and in depth knowledge which
    needs to be shared. The author has taken painstaking efforts spread over the last five
    years to bring out this book consolidating his vast practical experience and
    continuous experiments to enhance the efficiency in sugar industry keeping in view
    emerging technologies for the benefit of the industry. In the Institute, Mr. Patil has
    been a moving force behind not only engineers to perform better and better but he is
    also a source of inspiration and dedication for technocrats and scientists of other
    disciplines in the institute.
