Assignment 1

This document contains 7 questions regarding stochastic systems and probability. The questions cover topics like the probability of defective switches from different manufacturing plants, the probability of a signal arriving over parallel paths with repeaters, probabilities of items being out of tolerance, and the probability of different individuals being tall. The final question models customer arrivals at a mall as a Poisson process and asks for the probability of the number of arrivals falling within a certain range.

Assignment 1

Fall-20-EE-891-Stochastic Systems
Instructor: Dr Fahd Ahmed Khan
Due Date: 27 Nov 2020

Qno1
A company producing electric switches has three manufacturing plants 50, 30 and 20 percent,
respectively, of its products. Suppose that the probabilities that a switch manufactured by these
plants is defective are 0.02, 0.05, and 0.01, respectively.
a) If a switch is selected at random from the output of the company, what is the probability
that it is defective?
b) If a switch is selected at random from the output of the company, what is the probability
that it is not defective?
c) If a switch selected at random is defective, what is the probability that it was manufactured
by plan 2.

Qno2
In a communication system the signal sent from point a to point b arrives by two paths in parallel.
Over each path the signal passes through two repeaters (in series). Each repeater in one path has a
probability of failing (becoming an open circuit) of 0.005. This probability is 0.008 for each
repeater in the other path. All repeaters fail independently of each other. Find the probability that
the signal will not arrive at point b.

Qno3
A production line manufactures 10-liter gasoline cans with a volume tolerance of up to 5%. The
probability that any one is out of tolerance is 0.03. If five cans are selected at random.
a) What is the probability that they are all out of tolerance?
b) What is the probability that exactly two are out of tolerance?
Qno4
According to the press release of the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, the number of men in the
country stand at 106,449,322 while the number of women are 101,314,780. The total population
of Pakistan stands at 207,774,520. Meanwhile, there are 10,418 transgender in Pakistan. Suppose
that 40% of males are tall, 20% of females are tall and 5% transgender are tall
 Calculate the probability that if somebody is “tall” (meaning taller than 6 ft or whatever),
that person must be male.
 Calculate the probability that if somebody is “tall” (meaning taller than 6 ft or whatever),
that person must be female.
 Calculate the probability that if somebody is “tall” (meaning taller than 6 ft or whatever),
that person must be transgender.

Qno5

Two players Naveed and Waseem are competing at a quiz game involving a series of questions.
On any individual question, the probabilities that Naveed and Waseem give the correct answer is
α and β respectively, for all questions, with outcomes for different questions being independent.
The game finishes when a player wins by answering a question correctly.

Compute the probability that Naveed wins if

(a) Waseem answers the first question
(b) Naveed answers the first question.

Qno6
Islamabad’s biggest shopping mall, Centaurus Mall, has come under fire after it announced on
Thursday that some customers will be required to purchase entry coupons. In what it called a move
to avoid ‘overcrowding’, Centaurus Mall in a public notice said customer will have to buy a Rs100
coupon to enter the mall. The public notice listed 23 types of people who will not have to purchase
the entry coupons. Those exempted include all women and children under 12, senior citizens,
lawmakers and executives, diplomats and foreigners, journalists and lawyers, members of country
clubs, doctors and teachers. Further, the notice said, “famous players of hockey, cricket, football
and golf” and “celebrities” do not have to purchase the entry coupon. After this policy the number
of customers arriving at Centaurus Mall is modelled as a Poisson random variable. On average 10
customers arrive per hour. Let X be the number of customers arriving from 9am to 10:30am. What
is P(10<X≤15)?
