Dilemma

The document discusses Brendan's dilemma about whether to cheat on a quiz after his father said it was okay to lie sometimes if it doesn't hurt anyone. Several perspectives are provided: 1) Brendan may have hurt himself by lying since his father set a high standard of morality. 2) The author copied answers from a teacher's manual in elementary school to prepare for an academic competition and won first prize, finding it worthwhile. 3) Brendan should talk to his father again to clarify what he meant about lying being acceptable sometimes.

Dilemma

1. What is Brendan’s dilemma?

- He was told not to cheat and have good grades. And yet seeing the actual world with
full of lies and deceptions.
2. Have you ever seen an adult or friend do something you felt wasn’t right? What did
you do? How did it make you feel?
- Yes, I have seen an adult doing some shitty stuff. I didn’t do nothing, I just standby
and not saying anything. And frankly, I didn’t care about him and what he did.
3. Do you think Brendan should try to talk to his Dad again about his lying at the
movies?
- I think he should ask his father once more and clarify what means when he said that
it’s okay to lie sometimes as long as nobody gets hurt.
4. Who might Brendan have hurt by cheating on his quiz?
- nobody!
5. Brendan’s Dad said it was okay to be dishonest if no one was hurt. Who do you think
might have been hurt by his lying at the movie ticket office?
- Probably, Brendan might be hurt because his father set a high standard of morality to
him and yet, his father never lived by his own rule.
6. Have you ever felt like doing (or have you actually done) the “wrong thing” because
you felt like it was worth it? Do you still feel that it was worth it?
- when I copied all the answers to all the quizzes from the teacher’s manual back in
primary grades. And it was worth it because I was the Academic contestant of Camalig
elementary School. I have to master all eight (8) subjects. I won the first prize thanks to my
diligent copying skills. But I studied it as well. Yes, I still feel that it was worth it because I
need it, I have to win the competition. Nobody ever complains. In fact, some of the teaching
staff of Camalig elementary School consulted me sometimes when they got difficulties in
some subjects like science, English and Arpan.
