INTRODUCTION: - Cement Autoclave is designed to meet requirements of

ASTM C 151for carrying out soundness tests on cement.

It is also suitable for other testing purposes constant steam pressures between 4kg.cm2 and 21kg/cm2.
3

DESCRIPTION: The autoclave consists of a seamless steel cylinder with bolted cover. It is mounted
in a sturdy supporting frame and enclosed in a heat-insulated metal housing which is finished in black-
wrinkle-paint.

The pressure gauge, safety valve and steam clock are mounted on a manifold, which can be easily
attached to the side of the autoclave. The safety valve is set to operated at approximately 23kg. / Cm2.

Three strip type heaters are fitted in the autoclave, which has an electrical panel attached on one side.
Three switches, one for each heater, with indicator lights are fitted in the control panel. A fourth toggle
switch is also provided for the blower which is used to accelerate the cooling down of the autoclave after
the test. Two heaters are provided with energy regulators to control the rate of heating of the apparatus.

A main indicator, a voltmeter and an ammeter are also fitted in the control panel. A test bar holder r
mould stand is provided to hold eight specimens in the vertical position in the autoclave.

An …key with pipe handle is supplied for fitting or recording the cover of the autoclave.

SET UP & TEST PROCEDURE:- After unpacking and cleaning the apparatus, assemble the pressure
gauge and blower with the autoclave , in such a way that the exhaust pipe of the blower directs the air
flow upward at the bottom of the body.

Open the cover of the autoclave and add clean water to a depth of aprox.5cm.

Place the specimens in the stand and place the stand vertically in the autoclave.

Replace the cover and clamp it down rigidly by tightening the allen and bolts.

The supply leads to the mains and, keeping the toggle switch of bowler off, put on all the three heaters.
The three indicators will glow. Open the steam cock to vent off air till steam starts coming out of it. Close
this valve and put off the heater (2). Regulate the rate of heating from energy regulators ER1 & ER3 so
that the temperature of autoclave is raised at such a rate that the gauge pressure of steam to 21 kg. / Cm2
is developed in 1 to 1 ¼ hours from the time heat is turned on. The 21kg./cm2 pressure should be
maintained for 3 hours to keep this pressure constant, the energy regulators ER & ER3 may be readjusted
and if need be, one more heater should be put-off. At the end of three hours period, the heat supply shall
be shut-off and the autoclave cooled at a rate such that the pressure will be less than 1 kg / cm2 at the end
of one hour any pressure remaining shall be released by opening the steam
cock particularly until atmosphere pressure is attained. Then open the autoclave and place the test
specimens immediately in water, the temperature of which is above 90degree Celsius. The water
surrounding the bars shall then be cooled at a uniform rate by adding cold water so that the temperature
of water surrounding the specimens shall then be 15 mins. The water surrounding the specimens should
be maintained at 27degree Celsius for 15min. When the specimens shall be surface dried and their
lengths measured again the length comparator.

SAFETY PRCAUTIONS:-
1. The pressure gauge should have a maximum capacity of 42 kg / cm2. This is important because
with too small a capacity, there is but a little length of are in which the gauge hand may indicate
the pressure above the maximum specified working pressure. The operator must be sure that the
gauge needle has not passed the maximum graduation on the scale.
2. It is well too keep the pressure gauge tested, but the thermometer should also be used together
with the pressure gauge, so as to provide a means for detecting any failure of the pressure gauge
4
to operate properly and also to indicate any unusual conditions such as that resulting from loss of
water from the autoclave during the test.
3. The automatic electrical controls should always be maintained in proper working conditions.
4. The safety/ valve should be kept set to relive the pressure at about 23 kg/cm2. The safety valve
shall be tested at least twice a year either with a gauge-testing device or with the automatic
controls so as to allow the autoclave to reach a pressure of about 23 kg.cm2. at which pressure
the safety valve shall either open or be adjusting to open.
5. Heavy leather work gloves shall be worn to prevent burning of hands when removing the top of
the auto clave when removing the autoclave lid, the lid shall be fitted so that any steam escaping
from beneath the lid is directed away from the operator.
6. It shall be remembered that the return of gauge needle to the initial restor starting point does not
necessarily indicate zero pressure within the autoclave. There may then still remain an
appreciable pressure before opening the autoclave cover.
MAINTENANCE: keep the apparatus always clean. Clean & dry the inside of autoclave after the tests.
The pressure gauge should be frequently calibrated depending upon the use of autoclave.
All the electrical controls should be maintained in proper working conditions & checked before operating
the autoclave.
When not in use, the pressure gauge should be removed & kept at safe place.
