ABSTRACT

The study was an attempt to measure the test taking skills of students in

terms of their factual recognition, concept formation, critical thinking, pattern

recognition, logical reasoning, simplicity of explanation, objectivity of observation,

planning and organization. Furthermore, the study attempted to correlate these

specific testing skills to students’ academic competence in the sub competencies

such as general education, professional education and major subjects.

vi

Using a descriptive method of research, it involved the 45 purposively

selected graduating students-test takers of the College of Teacher Education of

Laguna State Polytechnic University, San Pablo City Campus, during the academic

year 2014-2015. Eight (8) sets of tests measuring the sub-skills in test taking and

students’ test scores in the PRE-LET were utilized to gather the data.

Results revealed that the there was a significant relationship between the test

taking skills and academic competence of the students. It can be inferred that

teachers may consider enhancing the domains of test taking skills of the students in

able to help them fully develop their proficiency in the different academic

competencies.
