Configuring PCAnywhere for one host and one or more view nodes
using RAS

Subject: This notes covers configuring PCAnywhere for access via the Ethernet
network from the host node. This eliminates the need to install modems on each
view node for remote access.

Applies To: All versions of PMCS using PCAnywhere 7.5 or later

The typical PCAnywhere configuration on a PMCS system with view nodes consists
of PCAnywhere configured as a host running on the PMCS host and PMCS view
nodes. Access to each PC is from individual modems on each PC. This also
necessitates the need for a dedicated phone line to each PC. To access any one of the
PC's a remote control session PC must place a phone call to each PC.

However, PCAnywhere has a little used feature which allows it to do remote control
of a PC via a LAN. In this configuration only one modem and phone line is needed,
howerver Remote Access Server(RAS) must be installed on this PC. Generally this is
done on the PMCS host. But it could be installed on any PMCS view node or even a
non-PMCS PC on the LAN.

Basic Configuration: Assume there are 3 PC's on a network; PC1, PC2 and PC3.
PC1 has a modem, a dedicated phone line on it and the Remote Access Service
(RAS) installed. Please see appnote 31 on how to configure RAS. Also PC1 is
configured to be a PCAnywhere host via the LAN.

PC2 and PC3 have been configured to be PCAnywhere hosts via the LAN. It is
irrelevant which PC is running as a PMCS host or PMCS view node.

Please see the PCAnywhere user guide for instructions on how to configure a
PCAnywhere host and remote control session for use over a LAN. Please note that
TCP/IP needs to be installed on each machine.

User Scenario:

The user would dial into the PC1 via RAS and become a memeber of the network.
A PCAnyhwere "Remote Control" session would then be launched to take control of
PC1. The user would then initiate another PCAnywhere remote control session
from within PC1 to "take over" either PC2 or PC3. Basically the user is running
PCAnywhere within PCAnywhere. Care must be taken to remember which PC the

user is controlling!

Notes: The remote control over a LAN option is available on virtually all remote
access programs so the above procedure could probably be used with them also.

PCAywhere has also released a Java applet and an Active X controller for use in
Internet Explorer and Netscape. This allows PCAnywhere to initiate a network
remote control session from within these browsers
