Tutorial 8

This document contains 6 questions related to thermodynamic processes involving changes in properties of refrigerants, water, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and steam. The questions ask the reader to calculate work, temperature, quality, and heat loss given initial and final states during compression, expansion, heating and mixing processes.

TUTORIAL 8
Question 1
A frictionless piston-cylinder device initially contains 50 L of saturated liquid refrigerant-134a.
The piston is free to move, and its mass is such that it maintains a pressure of 500 kPa on
the refrigerant. The refrigerant is now heated until its temperature rises to 70oC. Calculate
the work done during this process.

Question 2
A 1m3 of saturated liquid water at 200oC is expended isothermally in a closed system until
the quality is 80 percent. Determine the total work produced by this expansion in kJ.

Question 3
A frictionless piston-cylinder device contains 2kg of nitrogen at 100kPa and 300 K. Nitrogen
is now compressed slowly according to the relation PV 1.4 = constant until it reaches final
temperature of 360 K. Calculate the work input during this process.

Question 4
Carbon dioxide contained in a piston-cylinder device is compressed from 0.3 to 0.1 m 3.
During the process, the pressure and volume are related by P = av -2, where a = 8 kPa.m 6.
Calculate the work done on the carbon dioxide during this process.

Question 5
1kg of water that is initially at 90oC with a quality of 10 percent occupies a spring loaded
piston cylinder device. This device is now heated until the pressure rises to 800 kPa and the
temperature is 250oC. Determine the total work produced during this process in, kJ.

Question 6
Two tanks (Tank A and Tank B) are separated by a partition. Initially Tank A contains 2 kg
steam at 1 MPa and 300oC while Tank B contains 3 kg saturated liquid vapor mixture at
150oC with a vapor mass fraction of 50 percent. The partition is now removed and the two
sides are allowed to mix until the mechanical and thermal equilibrium are established. If the
pressure at final state is 300 kPa, determine
(a) The temperature and the quality of the steam (if mixture) at the final state

(b) The amount of heat loss from the tanks.
