CONSRTUCTION MATERIALS USED IN INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE

 The choice of materials for any machine parts depends on the following consideration.

 Heat conducting.
 Space filling.
 Life expectancy.
 Cost.
 Appearance.

 The following are materials used in internal combustion engine.

1. Aluminum alloy
Aluminum alloy use has gained popularity since 1960`s It is much used in construction of
cylinder block and pistons. This is because of its less weight.

The only disadvantage of using Aluminum in engine block is that they are expensive
compared to cast iron alloys.

2. Cast iron.
Cost iron is used in manufacturing of cylinder heads. This is due to its excellent damping
capacity, good wear, temperature resistance, low cost and highly available.

3. Steel
Steel is used in the construction of connecting rod and flywheel. This is due to its, high
strength and its low cost.

4. Bronze.
Bronze is used in the construction of gears. It is due to its low cost and is adequate and
also it is resistant to wear.

5. Copper.
Copper is used in making spark plug gaskets and cylinder head gaskets. This is because
of resilience and its strength.

6. Magnesium alloys.
Magnesium alloys are used in value covers, cylinder head covers, intake manifolds and
air intake adaptors. The biggest attraction for manufactures is that the material is much
lighter than cast iron and aluminum alloys.
