The 4D BIM " is a useless technique in Project Management, It
doesn't add any benefits to the project control ,In addition it's main purpose is to
visualize the construction schedule , resulting that it's an extra fancy requirement
and we can survive with out it".
From my point of view , I always get confused when i hear these phrases and I
really don't understand How/Why they judge the 4D BIM in this way or what is
their source of information about the 4D BIM.
In every BIM debate/discussion there is someone who talks about how the
traditional way of project management still could be better than the 4D BIM
project management approach, also he talks about how easy it is to create the 4D
model by simply linking each 3D element with the relevant task in the
schedule and having a simple useless video .
Sometimes I understand his fear to move out from his traditional comfort zone to
a new dynamic zone, or maybe his resistance to change because of some people
talking about the 4D BIM as a rocket science, while in fact it is much easier and
useful than the traditional ways.
So since the 4D is about visualization, I will set in this post the main benefits of
the BIM 4D and Compare it visually to the Traditional approach in project
management using charts only.

I have prepared this questionnaire to assist you in your final judgement about the
two project management approaches.
Please mark in the blank box to give a 1 point for the Traditional approach or 1
point to The 4D BIM integration approach as per the comparison number and I I

to apply one of the approaches in each comparison
1. Planning and scheduling :
Traditional : Only schedule and bar-chart.
4D BIM : Link your schedule to the 3D model, for better understanding of the
project .

2. Baseline Vs Actual analysis:
Traditional : Bar-chart comparison in min. 25 A3 pages.
4D BIM : Visual comparisons in 2 minutes video.
3. construction progress tracking and control:
Traditional : Inaccurate layout coloring and progress representation.
4D BIM : Export the 4D model to your Ipad, go to the site , update it , go back to
office , link it to the pc and automatically update your progress.

4D BIM : Very easy to solve any problem and make decisions.
6. Claim analysis and dispute resolution:
Traditional : Very hard to prove who is responsible for the delay and required so
much time and money.
4D BIM : Very easy to prove who is responsible for the delay and what is the
expected outcomes in the future using simply 1 video.

I have conducted this survey in one of my 4D BIM seminars on 28. Feb 2016 in Heriot-
Watt University Dubai. It was done by 30 master degree students with various
engineering back ground ( Civil - Arch - QS - Mep ) and the results was impressive as
shown in the below table and chart.

As a result 96% voted for the 4D BIM while 3.8% voted for the traditional
approach. The most impressive thing is 6 out of 12 comparison attributes voted 100%
to the 4D BIM.
Maybe some other factors are not involved in this comparison such as the initial cost of
implementing the 4D BIM, but am sure at all cases the 4D will be much powerful and
useful than the traditional approach.

Good one. Comprehensive comparison. What about effort required in 4D BIM vs in traditional 3w
approach ?. How can we convince clients in this aspect ?. If Target audience in survey are clients,
results can be different. (edited)

Majority of Australian firms are still insisting on using the square wheels (Proven and tested) 2y
however they are slowly getting rounded edges on them and hopefully in no time we can see
4D and 5D. I hope you are well
