Building Safety Features

Building Safety Features fitted throughout the property may include…

 Fire Alarm Systems

connected directly to the
Fire Brigade.
(smoke alarms, heat
detectors and sprinklers)

 Manual Call Points (M.C.P.) or Break

Glass Alarms are also connected
directly to the Fire Brigade.

Three Elements of Fire

“Fire needs all three of these elements to burn.

If we take one away, the fire will go out.
This forms the principle of extinguishment.”

Classes of Fire
Fires are categorised into six classes, they are:

Class A – Flammable Solids

Class B – Flammable Liquids

Class C – Flammable Gases

Class D – Metals
The class of fire
determines
the type of fire Class E – Energised Electrical Equipment
extinguisher to use
Class F – Cooking Oils
6

Methods of Extinguishment
There are three main methods of extinguishing a fire.
Starving – removing or limiting the fuel
Eg. Turning off the Gas supply

Smothering – removing the oxygen or limiting its supply.

Eg. Covering burning cooking oil with a Fire Blanket

Cooling – removing the heat

Eg. Bucket of water onto a waste paper basket

Fire Fighting Equipment

Fire fighting equipment that is fitted throughout the Warner Village
Group includes:

Fire Extinguishers
Hose Reels
Fire Blankets

In addition to these items of equipment there are also special fire

suppression systems fitted in areas of risk. These include –

Sprinklers Deluge Systems

Fire Blankets
When to use a fire blanket
Fire blankets are ideal for use with fires on a
stove. They can also be used to extinguish a
person whose clothes are on fire.

A fire blanket starves the fire of oxygen.

How to use a fire blanket

1. Pull down tabs to release the blanket.
2. Shake it open and holding the tabs,
cover hands with the balnket ends.
3. Gently cover the vessel containing the
fire completely.
4. Turn off the heat source.
5. Leave blanket in position until cool.

To Extinguish A Person
Wrap blanket around victim and roll victim on ground.
8

Using A Fire Reel

1. Turn on stop valve to release hose.
2. Run out hose.
3. Turn on water at nozzle and direct stream at base of fire.

* Never use on electrical fires or flammable liquids.

* The procedure is found on the hose reel.

* The hose is 36 metres long.

9

Types of Extinguishers
Water – Red all over

Foam – Blue in colour or Red with Blue band

Carbon Dioxide ( CO2) – Red with Black band

Wet Chemical – Beige or Red with Beige band

Dry Chemical – Red with white band

Vaporising Liquid – Red with Yellow band

10

Using A Fire Extinguisher

When using a Fire Extinguisher we need to remember the acronym

P.A.S.S.

P – Pull the pin

A – Aim at the base of the Fire

S – Squeeze the Handle

S – Sweep the nozzle from side to side at the

base of the flames
