Process Modeling and Simulation

This document contains 3 questions about modeling liquid level systems and mixing processes. Question 1 asks to derive dynamic mass balance equations for two tank systems, one with non-interacting tanks and one with interacting tanks. Question 2 asks to derive the mathematical model for a liquid level system shown in a figure and identify what type of model it is. Question 3 asks whether a mixing tank system shown in a figure is a lumped parameter or distributed parameter system and explain the reasoning.

Tutorial

Question 1

Derive the dynamic mass balance equations for the following two simple cases (Figure
1.1 represents Case 1 and Figure 1.2 represents Case 2). Assume (i) a linear relationship
between liquid level and flow rate through the outlet valve, and (ii) constant liquid
density.

Question 2

Consider a liquid level system as shown in Figure 2.1. Derive the mathematical model.
What type of model is it? Why?

Question 3

Consider a perfectly insulated, well-stirred tank, as shown in Figure 3.1, where a hot
liquid stream at 75°C is mixed with a cold liquid stream at 15°C. Is it a lumped
parameter system or a distributed parameter system? Explain why.
