2. READING COMPREHENSION (1pt)
Read the passage and choose the best answer for each question below.
The Winterthur Museum is a collection and a house. There are many museums devoted to
the decorative arts and many house museums, but rarely in the United States is a great collection
displayed in a great country house. Passing through successive generations of a single family,
Winterthur has been a private estate for more than a century. Even after the extensive renovations
made to it between 1929 and 1931, the house remained a family residence. This fact is of
importance to the atmosphere and effect of the museum. The impression of a lived-in house is
apparent to the visitor: the rooms look as if they were vacated only a short while ago whether by
the original owners of the furniture or the most recent residents of the house can be a matter of
personal interpretation. Winterthur remains, then, a house in which a collection of furniture and
architectural elements has been assembled. Like an English country house, it is an organic
structure; the house, as well as the collection and manner of displaying it to the visitor, has changed
over the years. The changes have coincided with developing concepts of the American arts,
increased knowledge on the part of collectors and students, and a progression toward the
achievement of a historical effect in period-room displays. The rooms at Winterthur have followed
this current, yet still retained the character of a private house.
The concept of a period room as a display technique has developed gradually over the years
in an effort to present works of art in a context that would show them to greater effect and would
give them more meaning for the viewer. Comparable to the habitat group in a natural history
museum, the period room represents the decorative arts in a lively and interesting manner and
provides an opportunity to assemble objects related by style, date, or place of manufacture.

C. The old furniture was replaced D. The estate became a museum
84. What does the author mean by stating "the impression of a lived-in house is apparent to the
visitor" (lines 7-8)?
A. Winterthur is very old
B. Few people visit Winterthur
C. Winterthur does not look like a typical museum
D. The furniture at Winterthur looks comfortable
85. The word "assembled" in line 12 is closest in meaning to
A. summoned B. appreciated C. brought together D. fundamentally changed

1 It’s very important to have health teeth. Good teeth help us to chew our food. They
2 also help us to look nicely. How does a tooth go bad? The decay begins in a little crack in the
3 enamel covering of the tooth. This happens after germs and bits of food have collected there.
4 Then the decay slowly spreads inside the tooth. Eventually, poisonous goes into the blood,
5 and we may feel quite ill. How can we keep our teeth healthy? First, we ought to visit our
6 dentist twice a year. He can fill the small holes in our teeth before they destroy the teeth. He
7 can examine our teeth to check that they are growing in the right way. Fortunately, many
8 people wait until they have toothache before they see a dentist. Secondly, we should brush
9 our teeth with a toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste at least twice a day once after breakfast
10 and once before we go to bed. We can also use wood toothpicks to clean between our teeth
11 after a meal. Thirdly, we should eat food that is good for our teeth and our body: milk,
12 cheese, fish, brown bread, potatoes, red rice, raw vegetables and fresh fruit. Chocolate,
13 sweets, biscuits and cakes are bad, especially when we eat it between meals. They are
14 harmful because they stick to our teeth and cause decay.

A NOBLE GIFT
1 One of the most famous monument in the world, the Statute of Liberty, was presented to
2 the United States of America in the nineteenth century by the people of France. The great
3 statute, which was design by the sculptor Auguste Bartholdi, took ten years to complete.
4 The actual figure was made into copper supported by a metal framework which had been
5 especially constructed by Eiffel. Before it could be transported to the United States, a site
6 had to be found for it and a pedestal had to be built. The site chosen was an island at the
7 entrance of New York Harbour. By 1884, a statute which was 151 feet height, had been
8 erected in Paris. The following year, it was taken to pieces and sent to America. By the
9 end of October 1886, the statute had been put together again and it was official presented
10 to the American people by Bartholdi. Ever since then, the great monument has been a
11 symbol of liberty for million of people who have passed through New York Harbour to
