560.325 Homework Assignment 1

The document outlines a homework assignment with two problems involving the design of unreinforced concrete structures. Problem 1 involves designing a concrete monument with a square cross-section subjected to gravity and wind loads. Problem 2 involves designing an unreinforced concrete cantilever balcony with a live load of 60 psf.

325 Homework Assignment 1

two problems due Tuesday, September 20 at 4pm
office hours: M 10-11, Tu 10-11 and 1-2:30 (rm 212)

1. Design a simple unreinforced concrete monument with a square cross section. The width is
h = 10 feet and the height is L.

The monument will be subjected to gravity and wind forces. The total wind force on the
monument is Lhp. Your task is to find the maximum height L using f'c = 5000 psi and fr =
8 f 'c .

a. Find the maximum height if there is no wind load (p = 0). Remember to multiply the
dead load (fixed gravity load) by 1.2. The maximum compressive stress should be
less than 50% of 0.85f'c.

b. Find the maximum height for a wind load with pressure p = 25 psf. Remember to
multiply the live load (due to the wind) by 1.6. The maximum tensile stress should
be less than 50% of fr. (The compressive stress is not important in this part of the
problem.)
c. Find the horizontal and vertical deflections at the top of the monument designed in
part (b). While computing the deflections, do not multiply the live load by 1.6 or the
dead load by 1.2.

d. Find the total horizontal force and vertical force (the weight of the monument).
Make a one-sentence comment on the horizontal and vertical stiffness of the
monument.

e. Concrete will always form cracks, as explained later in the course. Explain in a few
sentences how part (b) should be rephrased to give a much safer design. It is not
necessary to do any calculations in part (e).

2. Using the same concrete as in problem 1, design an unreinforced concrete cantilever

balcony. The live load is 60 psf. The balcony should extend 6 ft beyond the cantilever
support. (The width of the balcony is not important in this problem.)

a. Find the thickness h so that the maximum tensile stress is less than 50% of fr.
Remember to use the load factors of 1.2 and 1.6.

b. For the design in part (a), find the deflection of the balcony at the end. Do not use
the load factors in the deflection calculation.

c. Make a comment about the effects of cracks on the design of unreinforced concrete
balconies.
