Assignment 1

This document contains instructions for Assignment #1 which is due on October 29th, 2020. It can be submitted in either hardcopy or softcopy form. The assignment contains 6 questions related to transmission lines. Question 1 asks to derive an expression for characteristic impedance of a transmission line. Question 2 asks to calculate the fraction of width that needs to be added or removed from a 78 ohm transmission line to achieve an impedance of 75 ohms. Question 3 asks to calculate the phase constant and phase velocity for a given transmission line. Questions 4, 5 and 6 contain multiple parts related to transmission lines, standing waves, input impedance, reflection coefficient and calculating voltages and currents along a transmission line with given parameters.

Assignment # 1: (CLO 1 & 2)

Assignments should be done on A-4 pages. Submission can be done in both hardcopy/softcopy
form.

Submission deadline: 29th October 2020.

Q1: The characteristic impedance of transmission line is given as

Derive the above relationship.

Q2: A 78 Ω lossless planar line was designed but did not meet a requirement. What fraction of
the widths of the strip should be added or removed to get the characteristic impedance of 75 Ω?

Q3: A lossless transmission line operating at 4.5 GHz has L=2.4𝜇𝐻/𝑚 and Z0 = 85Ω. Calculate
the phase constant and phase velocity. Is the line dispersion less or not.

Q4: An 80-ft transmission line operating at 12 MHz is terminated by a load Z L. At 22 m from the
load, the input impedance is 100 - j120 Ω. If u= 0.8c,

(a) Calculate ΓL, Zin,max , and Zin,min .

(b) Find ZL, s, and the input impedance at 28 m from the load.

(c) How many Zin, max and Zin, min are there between the load and the 100 — j120 Ω input
impedance?

Q5: An antenna, connected to a 150-Ω lossless line, produces a standing wave ratio of 2.6. If
measurements indicate that voltage maxima are 120 cm apart and that the last maximum is 40 cm
from the antenna, calculate

(a) The operating frequency

(b) The antenna impedance

(c) The reflection coefficient. Assume that u = c.

Q6: A 100 km telephone line has a series resistance of 4 /km, an inductance of 3 mH/km, a
leakage conductance of 1 S/km, and a shunt capacitance of 0.015 F/km, at an angular
frequency  = 5000 rad/s. At the sending end there is a generator supplying 100 volts peak, at
5000 radians per second, in series with a resistance of 300 . The load at the receiving end
consists of a 200  resistor. Find the voltage and current as functions of z, and calculate their
values at the midpoint of the line, if the load current IL = −0.115 + j0.0268 A.
