Practical Performance Car – Braking Calculation Spreadsheet

Notes for use

 The model is purely static – ie it calculates the braking force on each
axle and takes no account of weight transfer under braking. You need
to make an intelligent guess about this. The amount of weight
transferred will depend on the type of car. A front wheel drive car
with a tall engine and a short wheelbase would transfer about 20% of
its weight from the rear wheels to the front under 1g braking. A rear
wheel drive sports car with a long wheelbase might transfer only 15%.
To help you see the effects the sheet ‘estimated weight transfer’ has
been added. This requires an intelligent guess about weights and
height of the centre of gravity.
 Your data should be entered in the cream coloured areas
 Results are presented in the grey coloured areas and you should not
make any changes to these cells. The workings for the braking model
can be found at A100
 The disc diameter should be the working disc diameter. If, for
example, on a 10inch disc there was 1/8 of an inch at the outside edge
untouched by the pad, the working diameter is 9.75.
 You need to enter the piston diameters for front and rear callipers.
There is provision for up to three lots of pistons for the worst-case
scenario of six pot callipers with each pair of pistons a different size.
For sliding callipers, you must multiply the number of pistons by two.
 The pad height is the distance across the pad from the inner edge to
the outer edge (typically 1.5 to 2 inches)
 A tandem master cylinder will have the same dimension for front and
rear circuits.
 If a balance bar is fitted, you must select yes for cell C27. A tandem
master cylinder needs the answer no. A spreadsheet does not deal
with single circuit systems. A tandem master cylinder will have the
same dimension for front and rear circuits.
