Load Resistance and Deflection Check

Project Location Marine Drive Hotel, Sri Lanka
Max Panel Dimensions (width x height) 1800 1500 mm(Width) X 2400 1800 mm(Height)
Proposed Glass Combination 8mm HS + 12mm air gap + 6 mm FT
Wind Load considered (in Kpa) 3 4.20 Kpa
Installation 90°, Vertical
Glass Thickness (in mm) Load resistance
(in Kpa)
HS FT
Load Resistance of Outer lite 8 7.14
Load Resistance of Inner lite 6 23.3

Hence, load resistance of proposed glass combination 8-12-6 DGU is 7.14 Kpa
and it can resist a wind load of 3 4.20 Kpa

Deflection Check
Aspect Ratio – L/B 1.20 1.33
Area of glass panel – L x B 2.70 4.32 Sqm Load share factor

Maximum wind load acting on outer glass 2.94 2.1 Kpa 0.7
Maximum wind load acting on Inner glass 1.26 0.9 Kpa 0.3
Load x Area2 (for Outer glass) 39.19 21.43 kN . M2

Load x Area2 (for Inner glass) 16.79 9.19 kN . M2

Deflection on the outer glass 16.5 mm As per deflection chart of ASTM E 1300
Deflection on the Inner glass 14.5 mm As per deflection chart of ASTM E 1300

Load Resistance and deflection check calculated as per ASTM E 1300

Allowable Deflection limit for 4-sided support – 19mm or L /60 25.00 whichever is lower (L= Shortest Span)

Conclusion

Glass combination of 8-12-6 DGU, is passing the load resistance check and deflection is within the allowable limit and hence glass design is
safe.

Note - Allowable deflection criteria is considered as per Indian Building Code. For Deflection Criteria in any country apart from
India, local guidelines shall prevail if any.
