Prob. 1: Draw the I-V and PV characteristics of photovoltaic solar silicon cell
graphically with the variation in radiation level and temperature both separately. Use
variation of one parameter at a time, the other parameter is considered constant at STC.
Consider the following parameters Boltzmann k = 1.38× 10-23 JK-1, electron charge q =
1.6× 10-19 C, ideality factor m = 1.2, Photocurrent, Iph = 4.0 A, reverse saturation current
Io = 8.5× 10-8 A, at the STC. Use the following I-V relationship.

Consider the suitable missing data from standard silicon PV cell. Consider 50% of data in
current source region and 50% of data in voltage source region for plotting the curve.
Draw three plots each with variation in solar radiation and temperature.

Prob. 2: An individual solar cell has the following parameters: Voc= 0.55 V, Isc =5.2 A,
Rs = 0.005 Ω, diode ideality factor =1.7, operating temperature=25oC and Io=8.6×10-6 A.
64 numbers of solar cell is connected in a module. Several such modules are used in an
array. The array has 6 rows of modules connected in parallel and each row has 8 modules
connected in series.
(a) Write down a single I-V equation for the array.
(b) What would be the open circuit voltage of the array?
(c) What would be the short circuit current of the array?
(d) What would be the peak power of the array under the standard test condition?
(e) What would be the current of the array at the operating voltage of 70 V?
(f) What would be the operating voltage of the array at the array current of 15A?

Prob. 3: A Si wafer-based solar PV module is characterized under STC and certified to


produce 75 Wp, with Vm and Im of 17.5 V and 4.28 A, respectively. The module was
installed in a field where its operating temperature of 55o C was measured. At this
operating condition what will be maximum power output and voltage at maximum
power?
Prob. 4: A solar PV module has rated power of 50 W. At STC its Voc is 21.0 V and Isc is
3.08A, its voltage and current at peak power point Vm is 17.6 V, Im is 2.84 A, respectively.
Its Vm falls from 17.6 V at 1000 W/m2 to 16.7 V at 100 W/m2 radiation intensity. Draw
the I-V and P-V characteristics on graph paper at solar radiation intensity of 250 W/m2,
500 W/m2 and 750 W/m2 and estimate its maximum power. Assume linear dependency of
solar photo current and voltage on solar radiation with respect to STC.

Prob. 5: A solar cell has following measured current and voltage at STC at various points
of cell operation.

Similar such 72 cells are connected in series to form a module. Draw the I-V and P-V
characteristics and determine the peak power point and fill factor. Calculate the
efficiency of the module.

Prob. 6: A solar PV module (rated at 75Wp) is operating at ambient temperature of 35o C


under the solar radiation intensity of 800 W/m2.What will be its maximum power output
under specified condition?

Prob. 7: A solar cell has the following parameters: photocurrent, Iph = 5.2 A, reverse saturation
current Io = 8.5× 10-8 A, Boltzmann k = 1.38× 10-23 JK-1, electron charge e = 1.6× 10-19 C, ideality
factor m = 1.7, at the STC. Total 36 numbers of such cells are connected in series to form a
module. Draw the I-V and P-V characteristics of the PV module, indicating the values of Voc, Isc,
Vmp, Imp, using the data table formed with the help of I-V equation. Assume the dependency of Voc
on temperature follows Voc (T ) = Voc, STC − γ v (T − TSTC ); where γ v = 0.075
Approximately plot the revised characteristics when the temperatures rise to 35°C.

Prob. 8: A solar PV module is operating at ambient temperature of 35oC under the solar
radiation intensity of 900 W/m2. Use Voc (T ) = Voc , STC − γ v (T − TSTC ); where γ v = 0.075
The module is operating under the condition specified in the above problem.
(a) What would be drop in the module’s Voc as compared to the STC condition?
(b) What would be the change in the module’s Isc as compared to its STC
condition?
(c) What would be the change in module’s Wp as compared to its STC condition?

Prob. 9: A solar PV module has rated power of 75 Wp. The module cell temperature is
considered higher as compared to STC. The nominal operating temperature (NOCT) of
the module at a given location was found to be 48oC. What will be the rated power of the
NOCT − Tamb
