Assignment Two: Deadline: 12 of December

The document contains an assignment for an irrigation and drainage engineering course. It includes questions about planning and designing irrigation projects, types of irrigation systems, and the Nile River's barrage and canal system. It also provides a contour map and asks students to design irrigation and drainage systems for the area shown, including alignments, synoptic diagrams, cross sections, and longitudinal sections. Students are asked to print the contour map on A3 paper.

Assignment Two
Deadline: 12th of December

1- Definitions and basic knowledge of irrigation and drainage engineering

(a) What are the steps of planning and designing an irrigation project?
(b) Define the meaning of alignment and synoptic diagram.
(c) Explain grades of canals and drains.

(d) Explain the different types of irrigation systems.

(e) Draw sketch and define the system of barrages and main canals along the Nile River.

2- The contour map in the figure, of scale 1:70000, shows the contour lines of a silty district at
intervals of 0.25 m. The area is bounded by a main canal, a main drain, and two major branch
drains. It is required to:

(a) Show a complete alignment of the irrigation and drainage systems to serve the area
(b) Draw synoptic diagrams for canals and drains assuming a lift irrigation system.
(c) Design the cross sections of the branch canal at points of variation if the canal is a clayey soil,
in average condition and the field water duty is 50 m3/Fed./day.
(d) Draw the longitudinal sections for the branch canal and major branch drain D1 or D2
showing the berm, water, bed, and bank lines.
(e) Draw the typical cross section for the branch canal.

Tip: The Contour Map should be printed on A3 paper.
