Assignment 2

This document provides an assignment with 4 questions regarding fluid statics concepts. Question 1 asks about buoyancy forces on different shaped objects submerged in liquid. Question 2 discusses designing water distribution systems in tall buildings to control hydrostatic pressure differences. Question 3 asks to calculate the specific gravity of a liquid based on force and moment data. Question 4 involves calculating how much of a wooden cube floats above the surface in an open and pressurized tank of water.

ASSIGNMENT 2 (Submission Deadline: 21-Decemeber-2020 2159 hrs.

)
Provide solution to the problems described below using the concepts of Fluid
Statics. Your solution should be unique and based on your own critical thinking
and ideas.

Q1) A 10-kg hollow copper ball, a 10-kg solid copper ball and a 10-kg solid copper
cube are submerged in a liquid. Will the buoyancy forces acting on these three
bodies be the same or different? Explain and justify your answer quantitatively.

Q2) Because of elevation differences, the water pressure in the second floor of
your house is lower than it is in the first floor. For tall buildings this pressure
difference can become unacceptable. Discuss possible ways to design the water
distribution system in very tall buildings so that the hydrostatic pressure
difference is within acceptable limits.

Q3) Suppose that the tank in Fig. Q3 is filled with liquid Y. Gate AB is 0.8 m wide
into the paper. Suppose that liquid Y causes a force F on gate AB and that the
moment of this force about point B is 26,500 Nm. What is the specific gravity of
liquid Y? Suppose any missing data logically.

Q4) A 3 ft x 3 ft x 3 ft wooden cube (specific weight = 37 lb/ft3) floats in a tank of
water.
a) How much of the cube extends above the water surface if the tank is open
from top?
b) If the tank was pressurized so that the air pressure at the water surface
was increased by 1.0 psi (i.e., 1 psig), how much of the cube would extend
above the water surface?
