Temporal Transition Analysis and Change Detection of Agricultural Fields in Ludhiana, Punjab Using Landsat Satellite Imageries

This document summarizes a study analyzing changes in agricultural fields in Ludhiana, Punjab, India over the past decade using Landsat satellite imagery. The study assessed temporal transitions and change detection from 2010-2020 in 5 year intervals by analyzing Normalized Difference Vegetation Index, Maximum Likelihood Classification, and Land Surface Temperature parameters. The analysis was conducted in Quantum GIS to understand declines in major crop production from declining water tables around Ludhiana city blocks.

Temporal transition analysis and change detection of agricultural fields in Ludhiana,

Punjab using Landsat satellite imageries

Raghav Dhanuka (2018BPLN024)

Abstract

Ludhiana  is  the  most  sophisticated  district for agriculture produce  and  plays  a key  role  in shaping
agrarian economy in Punjab. A wide variety of crops are sown in the district i.e., rice, wheat, maize,
cotton, sugarcane, etc.  Ludhiana district had achieved the national productivity award for the year
2004-05(Krishi Vigyan Kendra, ICAR)1. But in the past few years the water table is going down at an
alarming rate in the district and even more seriously around the Ludhiana city blocks which has
resulted in significant decline in production of some major crops (Department of Agriculture &
Farmer Welfare, Government of Punjab)2. To assess these changes temporal transition analysis is
carried out using Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Maximum Likelihood Classification
(MLC) and Land Surface Temperature (LST) parameters estimated from the data acquired by
Landsat-8 OLI/TIRS and Landsat 4-5 TM satellite imageries from the decade 2010-20 (in 5 years
interval). The software used for the analysis is Quantum GIS.
