What Is The Relationship Between Population Growth and Resource Sustainability?
The population and resource sustainability have an indirect relationship to each other in
which as the population increases, the rate of resource sustainability decreases. Growing
population pressures resources that can lead to scarcity. For example, in the book of Paul
Ehrlich in 1968 entitled The Population Bomb which emphasizes that the depletion of resources
will accelerate as it increases the competition for limited resources caused by the increase in
the human population. The overpowering growth of the population every day resulted to feed
more people with more scarce resources which notion of resource sustainability competed to
the support of our world. According to Malthus (1976), the population is the core of all global
complications and that population growth must be controlled. The population growth rate has
a negative impact because it reduces the level of resource sustainability and if we can regulate
the growth of the population, we can be able to meet the carrying capacity of the earth.
Moreover, while today's humanity meets its needs, considering the future generation must be
prioritized primarily because the abusive use of resources may become the reason why future
generations will unable to meet their needs. In addition, sharply reducing the rate of population
in developing countries is the most important goal where 97% of the world's population growth
is probable to take place. Some people argue that the greatest environmental problems shoot
from high levels of resource consumption per person which use 88% of the world's resources is
from developing countries. This particularly needed for developing countries to reduce their
population growth rate, to increase the level of economic growth, trade openness, and
corruption control of all countries, and to reduce the final consumption expenditure of
households and the public. Thus, since developing countries have greater consumption in our
world's resources that can lead to different environmental problems, they should be the one to
think of an idea and solutions on how they preserve these resources and be a leading country
to attain resource sustainability.
