Module 1 Activity - Basic Concepts in IOP PDF

The document summarizes a proposed research study on the influence of reward power on employee performance. The study would have three groups - one that receives rewards for good performance, one that does not receive rewards, and a control group. Both groups would perform the same task and be surveyed about their experiences. The key variables are reward power as the independent variable and employee performance as the dependent variable, measured by task completion time and quality. Participants would be selected based on skills, profession, age, culture, and other criteria. Data would be collected through observation and surveys, and hypotheses could be statistically tested based on survey results. Ethical considerations include fully informing participants and ensuring anonymity.

IOP Module 1 assignment

Activity 1:

1. Imagine that you chose a career path in IOP. What research questions or practice
issues (aspects of work behavior) interest you?

The research question I am interested in is the influence of power on the performance

of an employee in a workplace.

2. With your choice of aspects of work behavior, try to:

a. Develop a research title proposal and try also to design a study that would test the
hypothesis.

RESEARCH TITLE: The influence of reward power on the performance of employees in a work
place.

Study Design:

The Hypothesis here would be tested by an observational method. The concept would
somewhat like the operant conditioning theory of BF. Skinner where the good behavior will be
rewarded. There will be three groups. One where the reward power is given to those who
deserve it, and the second group or control group, where no reward power will be given. The
two groups will perform the same task, and after the experiment we will see which group worked
better. Afterwards, the subjects of the experiment will also be asked to fill out a survey on what
their experience was during the experiment.

b. What are your variables and try to operationalize them?

Independent variable: Reward power. Reward power here is a reward given when
someone does a good job. In this case, the experiment will include forms of appraisal and the
attainment of some sort of promotion within the task (group leader, overseer, etc.) when
someone gives a right answer or has a certain insight other didn’t see yet, about the task at
hand.

Dependent Variable: The performance of employees in a workplace. This will be

measured in the amount of time it takes the groups to finish the task, and the quality of their
work.

c. What will be your methodology in data collection?

1. Observation – The researcher will observe the behavior of the two groups and assess
the dynamic among the group members.

2. Survey – The researcher will also look at the subjective opinion and experience of the
participants.

d. Consider who your participants will be and how they will be selected.
Cababarros, Jessie Julia C. IOP Module 1 assignment

The participants will be selected according to their skills and professions. They will be
around the same age to avoid giving automatic authority to the ones older than you are.
It will be both men and women, and need to come from a similar cultural background.
This can be for example Filipino men and women between the age of 23-26, all
graduated in Psychology, and all working in the counseling department. The task they
will be working on is a case study, and they will try to diagnose the case.

e. How might the hypothesis be tested statistically?

The statistic results can come from the questionnaire, for this particular research, and
can further be performed on a larger scale to get a better view on the real impact in
multiple workplaces.

2. Using your research title proposal, what are some of the ethical considerations in
conducting the research?

The ethical considerations that need to be considered in this particular experiment is

that, all though we can’t fully disclose in the beginning that the purpose is to look at the
influence of reward power, we need to make sure that all the participants are informed
of this after the experiment, and should respect their decision if they want the results to
not be used for any research purposes. We ensure the anonymity of each participant,
and assure it will only be used for research purposes.
