Tutorial-Pure Substance-Answer

This document contains 4 additional tutorial problems on pure substances for semester 1 of the 2017/2018 school year. The problems involve determining properties of water or steam at various states using temperature-volume diagrams and taking the systems through heating or cooling processes. The problems ask for temperature, pressure, quality, enthalpy, volume or internal energy values at different states. Sample answers are provided for each problem.

ADDITIONAL TUTORIAL (PURE SUBSTANCE)

SEM 1, 2017/2018

1. A rigid tank with a volume of 1.8 m3 contains 15 kg of saturated liquid-vapor mixture of water at
90˚C. Now, the water is slowly heated. Determine the temperature at which the liquid in the
tank is completely vaporized. Also, show the process on a T-v diagram with respect to saturation
lines.
[Ans: 202.9˚C]

2. Superheated water vapor at 1.4 MPa and 250˚C is allowed to cool at constant volume until the
temperature drops to 120˚C. At the final state, determine (a) the pressure (b) quality, and (c) the
enthalpy. Also, show the process on a T-v diagram with respect to saturation lines.

[Ans: 198.7 kPa, (b) 0.1825, (c) 905.7 kJ/kg]

3. A rigid tank initially contains 1.4 kg saturated liquid water at 200˚C. At this state, 25 percent of
the volume is occupied by water and the rest by air Now, heat is supplied to the water until the
tank contains saturated vapor only. Determine (a) the volume of the tank, (b) the final
temperature and pressure, and (c) the internal energy change of the water.
[Ans: (a) 0.006476 m3, (b) 371.3˚C, 21,367 kPa, (c) 1892 kJ]

4. A piston-cylinder device initially contains 50 L of liquid water at 40˚C and 200 kPa. Heat is
transferred to the water at constant pressure until the entire liquid is vaporized
a. What is the mass of the water
b. What is the final temperature
c. Determine the total enthalpy change
d. Show the process on a T-v diagram with respect to saturation lines.
[Ans: (a) 49.61 kg, (b) 120.21˚C, (c) 125, 950 kJ]
