Flower Worksheet: Diagram Word List

Plants reproduce sexually through their flowers. Flowers produce male sex cells called pollen in the anther and female sex cells called ovules in the ovary. Pollen grains contain the male cells and must be transferred to the stigma of the pistil. There, a pollen tube grows down to the ovary where the pollen cell contents join with the ovules to form seeds inside the ovary. When conditions are right, the seed will germinate and sprout into a new plant.

Many plants can reproduce s________________________. They produce two d_________________

types of sex cells which must join together to make a new individual.
F__________________ are the parts of flowering plants which produce the s__________ cells.
The parts which produce the sex cells are the a_____________ and the o__________________.
The anther makes the m___________ cells, which are contained in the p_________________.
The ovary makes the f________________ cells called eggs or o____________________.

These sex cells are made by a special type of cell division.

The pollen has to be carried to the s______________ which is part of the p_____________.
There a little tube grows down the s________________ to the ovary.
The contents of the pollen grain travel down this tube to the ovary. There they join with
the ovules and then grow into a seed.
Inside the seed is a little plant. The plant is alive, but is in a resting state. Respiration is
going on, but very slowly. The plant is not growing at all.
When the seed is placed in the right conditions of warmth, moisture and oxygen, the
plant begins to grow. It sprouts out of the seed. This is called g__________________________.
