Benchmark Reflection of Professional Development Session

The presenter created a Google Classroom training session for teachers. Their mentor suggested improvements to the QR code and sharing the presentation with teachers ahead of time. The session used computers and a projector to demonstrate Google Classroom features for hands-on learning. The presenter plans to observe how teachers implement what they learned and provide additional trainings.

Benchmark Reflection of Professional Development Session

Summary

The presentation I created was about Google Classroom. It was created to help teachers

learn how to use Google Classroom, so students, whether at school or at home, could see their

assignments and turn them in easily. Mr. Wallace, my mentor, suggested I fix the QR Code, so I

made sure it works now. He suggested when I present this to the teachers to share it with them

ahead of time. I thought that was a great idea.

School-Based Data

This is a hands-on presentation. It is important for teachers to “acquire new knowledge

and information and to build a conceptual understanding of it” [ CITATION Nor \l 1033 ]. Doing this

while hearing me tell them what to do, seeing me complete the tasks using the projector, and

actually completing the tasks in this professional development session, will help the teachers

remember, because “what you do, you understand” [ CITATION DrR15 \l 1033 ].

School Vision and Mission

Part of Tuscola School District’s mission statement is “to develop basic problem-solving

skills, and to promote an understanding of the use of technology as a tool of human endeavor”

[CITATION Boa19 \p 13 \l 1033 ]. Using Google Classroom in classes helps teachers challenge their

students by putting their assignments online for students to complete. They can post worksheets,

links, or assign students to create projects. This teaches students to use technology and you add

problem solving into your assignments and sometimes students must problem solve when

technology does not do what they want it to do.

Technology

A computer for the teachers and a computer and projector for me, the presenter, were

used to present this professional development. This allows the teachers to complete the tasks I

tell them how to complete and they will see what to click on or where to type when I show them

using the computer and projector.

Next Steps

As a principal I would ask the teachers to add me as a teacher in their Google

Classrooms. This would allow me to see how they are using what they learned in the

professional development session. I would also ask if there were any questions or ideas they

wanted to discuss, so they could improve their Google Classrooms. When most of the teachers

are comfortable using Google Classroom, I would then offer another Google Classroom

professional development. In this session they would learn how to do more with Google

Classrooms like adding worksheets to individual students.

In professional development that I do not present, I want to be a part of the training. The

important thing to remember is “administrators need the training too” [ CITATION Dei18 \l 1033 ]. I

would like to learn what my teachers learn, if possible. This will allow us to have conversations

about ways to use the professional development in their classrooms.

Emerging Trends and Initiatives

I will meet with area principals and read principal blogs to keep up with emerging trends

and initiatives. My principal mentor was a part of a group that met every Wednesday this

summer. I was allowed to sit in the meetings with him. They discussed new ideas for the

upcoming school year and shared new information that had come across their desks. This

allowed Mr. Wallace to talk to his teachers and come up with new ideas. Then the next week he

would tell the principals in the Google Meet what he and his teachers had come up with using the

ideas from the principal meeting. He also shared articles with me that he received from EdWeek

that he subscribes to. Our Education for Employment Systems has area principals meet once a

month. This is a great tool for our principals.

Other things I can do to stay up-to-date would be to “subscribe to an e-newsletter or an

RSS feed” [ CITATION Jan \l 1033 ]. This will allow you to have the information sent to your e-

mail, so you can have the information in your email instead of having to find it.

Preparation and Confidence

I prepared for the presentation by creating the presentation and presenting it to myself.

Then I added what I needed to add and deleted things that would make it more difficult than it

had to be for the first session. I am very confident in this presentation, because it is a subject that

I have worked with for five years or more. My knowledge of Google Classroom will allow me to

teach the teachers with confidence and answer almost any question that should arise. I would be

willing to present this to my school or any other school in our district to help our teachers have

the best tools possible to teach their students.
