LESSON 3: Educational Reforms: The K to 12 Curriculum Example

1. How would you become a globally competitive graduate? Provide at least 5 ideas on this.
- There should be changes in the educational system. Our curriculum must be aligned with
the global standards.
- Students must be taught using inquiry-based learning. Through this, students may
develop critical thinking skills which will lead them to better understanding of real-life
concepts. It requires them to find practical solutions to solve real world problems.
- Communication Skills: A gradute should have good communication skills to effectively
change ideas with peers and adults from different backgrounds
- A student must possess technological literacy since we are now in digital era. These
existing technologies help us to be more productive since it is easier for us to
communicate and access information
- A student must be aware of the different culture of the world. A student must seek to
understand the culture of others to understand the behaviors and values.
2. What is the role of government in securing that Filipinos can compete in the global
educational arena?
- The role of the government in securing the education of Filipinos to be globally
competitive is to basically engage in designing laws that will enhance the educational
system of the Philippines. As of this time, we are now enjoying the K to 12 Curriclum
that promotes students to be globally competitive one. The government must also provide
scholarship programs to deserving Filipino students to give opportunities to engage
themselves into education that may develop their skills and talents. These honed skills
and talents may lead them to be employed to a workplace that needs their specific
disciplines either in the local level or in the international arena.
3. What might be some challenges you think that might be encountered as we prepare
ourselves to be globally competitive?
- As we aim to develop a globally competitive workforce, challenges were met that may
hinder this opportunity. As the government implemented the changes in the curriculum,
which is the K to 12, the nation’s readiness is not fully capacitated. Learning materials
were not insufficient to cater the need of all the learners, lack of infrastructures such as
classrooms, ICT room and libraries.

Text to World Connection
My ideas and key points are
In the verge of globalization, Philippines had already made a move to adapt with
these inevitable changes. The Philippines education system have realigned the curriculum
to meet the global standards in the provision of education that will in turn provide quality
graduates that can compete globally.
In the implementation of K to 12 Curriculum, the Department of Education
worked with CHED and TESDA to ensure the alignment of subjects to be taken by the
student in each level. The Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013 shall ensure that
learning opportunities must result to a life-long learning that will help them in the real-
life scenario.
To connect globally, some educational institutions have created joint programs
and partnerships with other schools/universities. It leads to sharing of resources and
strengths to achieve the common objective which is to produce globally competitive
graduates as our pillars for changes.
My realization and personal applications
As a public teacher, I have realized that teachers should not only teach the content of the
subject but to teach our students with concepts that will last for a long time. We must make sure
that our students developed skills according to their specific disciplines that are valuable and
essential in the field of work that they have chosen.
For 7 years, we are now enjoying the Enhanced Basic Education Program as a result of
the initiative of our government to provide an access of education that can compete globally. We
should be thankful to this movement because this marks as a start that we are embracing the
changes brought by globalization. Somehow, we can say that we’re not yet fully 100%
capacitated, but with the support of other departments, private institutions and by its citizen, we
can slowly but surely achieve our main goal which is to improve the status of our nation. Hand
by hand, we should play our vital role in the support of our government as a responsible citizen
of our country!
