18 - Compass For DD - Anti-Collision Exercise Answers - 061005

This document provides exercises for directional drillers to practice detecting potential collisions between wellbores. It examines different visualization and analysis methods for evaluating minimum separation distances and collision risk. Key metrics include the minimum center to center distance between wellbores, error separation factors, and which specific wellpath segments appear to most interfere with others based on overlapping error ellipses or proximity plots. The document compares results across different scanning methods to identify any discrepancies and understand their causes.

COMPASS FOR DIRECTIONAL DRILLERS

EXERCISE #2 – ANTI-COLLISION
A. Concepts

1. Anticollision warning levels.

2. Ratio factor = 1.2 (12 ÷ (7 + 3) = 1.2)

3. Shut In Producers

B. Spider Plot

503429227.doc 1
1. E6-S1P1. 9141.36 ft TVD at 14,000 ft MD.

2. ET02 target.

4. Which wellpath from Bullwinkle appears to interfere with

Discoverer’s E4-S0?

503429227.doc 2
C. Interpolation Interval

1. Anticollision settings.

2. Anti-Collision Color List.

503429227.doc 3
D. Ladder Plot

2. A2-S0 well.

3. Yes, error ellipses overlap.

503429227.doc 4
4. Minimum centre to centre distance = 55.10 ft.

5. Only 2 offset wells displayed.

503429227.doc 5
6. 874.52 ft center to center separation ÷ 630.40 ft combined error
= 1.39 error separation factor.

E. Proximity Plot

2. A2 and A15 are left.

3. Shut-in Producers at 7700 ft.

503429227.doc 6
4. Minimum centre to centre distance = 63.80 ft at 8200 ft MD.

Anti-collision Report shows the same SF of 0.08

5. Error ellipse around each wellpath.

F. Traveling Cylinder Plot

1. Results agree with those in steps D and E.

503429227.doc 7
G. Separation Factor Plot

1. Minimum separation factor = 0.07 at 8232.53 MD.

H. Scan Method - Traveling Cylinder

1. Set the Scan Method to Traveling Cylinder.

2. The traveling cylinders method computes distance from the

offset Wellbore stations back to the reference Wellbore. The
benefit of this method is that intercepts are detected even when
the Wellbores are approaching at a perpendicular. In this case,
there may be more than one point in the TC plane for the same
depth on the reference well.

503429227.doc 8
3. Minimum centre to centre distance = 60.12 ft at 7200 MD.

Anti-collision Report. Does not agree with the answer from D3 and
D4?

503429227.doc 9
4. Wellpaths within the selected range.

E4S0 TD’s at 8465’... so the box would be: 2 x (200 +

100*8465/1000) = 2093’

5. The Summary section details all those offset wellpaths that fell
within the Global Scan.

503429227.doc 10
I. Scan Method – Horizontal

1. Minimum centre to centre distance = 1025.66 ft at 13200 MD.

2. Minimum centre to centre distance = 1093.37 ft at 13500 MD.

This does not agree. Each scan method looks from a different
perspective to the other profile.

J. Error Ellipse Report

3. This is the first station below the mud line. Errors don’t start
accumulating until below the mud line.
