We should preserve every scrap of biodiversity as priceless while we learn to use it and

come to understand what it means to humanity.

Activity 4:  Think about these questions

1. How would you reconcile the emerging needs of human beings regarding their health and the
need to protect the biodiversity?

Biodiversity is a crucial factor for the properties and performance of ecosystems. Their stability depends
in part on the complex interactions of their inhabitants. Massive human interference decimates individual
species or drives them to extinction, while other existing species experience explosive growth, and yet
others invade or are introduced by humans. This alters the nature of ecosystems or destroys them outright
and impacts ecosystem services such as the provision of food and clean water.

Our contributions toward protecting biodiversity as students are limited only by our imagination since we
still don’t have enough resources, capability and power as strong as the people who have expertise in the
field. The best thing we can do at our very own age as students is to atleast raise awareness. I can explain
the consequences of deforestation to my family, friends and acquaintances. Tell people about the threat of
extinction and stimulate public discussion.

Also, reviewing my own lifestyle and consumption behavior. Avoiding products that contain palm oil.
With regard to wood, using products made of local rather than tropical timber will be a great help. Not
supporting the trade with tropical animals (parrots, reptiles, etc.) and never keep them as pets. Reducing
my meat consumption – or better yet, stop eating animal products altogether. Livestock feed is grown on
an industrial scale on land that was once rainforest. If I must eat meat, buy organic, or from small farms
that raise and slaughter their own livestock. And by saving energy wherever anf whenever I can.

2. Do you think scientific researches that modify the genes of organisms bring more
advantages than disadvantages?

While there are some of the disadvantages that we should fear of on modifying the genes of organisms,
we still can’t deny its positive impacts that I think dominates more.
Theoretical discussions have covered a broad range of aspects, issues and concerns debated and it
includes the capability of the GMO to escape and potentially introduce the engineered genes into wild
populations, the persistence of the gene after the GMO has been harvested, the susceptibility of non-target
organisms (e.g. insects which are not pests) to the gene product, the stability of the gene, the reduction in
the spectrum of other plants including loss of biodiversity, and increased use of chemicals in agriculture.
The environmental safety aspects of GM crops vary considerably according to local conditions. And there
are people who fear a dominant position of the chemical industry in agricultural development, a trend
which they do not consider to be sustainable.

But Genetically-modified organisms (GMOs) are some of the more recent and controversial tools that
have been developed. According to the companies and scientists who design new GMOs, this new
technology is harmless to humans, better for the environment, and is the only way to feed an ever-
growing population.
Together let us make a stand in protecting the nature, in this way we can protect our children's
future.

ACTIVITY 5: I-Pledge

Advocacy Writing

“Setting a Legacy of Beauty and Responsibility for Biodiversity”

The negative happenings around us today is something that isn’t new to us and can’t neglect or keep a
blind eye to. I believe if we will all come together and work us one we can all be advocates of change.

Nature is saying that love is missing because people don’t respect each other, they don’t respect the
nature, they don’t respect life. That’s why nature is reacting to everything that people do to her. Who
suffer is us, humankind. And love is what would solve our problem. We have to educate the people on
global warming. We should help them to control pollution, create global consciousness.

There are things that are much more important than gold. The most important is the sentiments of the
people. To give love and smile to a human being, to be able to give them a hand when needed, to give
help to someone who needs your presence, and also God is always with us which is very important. For
me the rainbow means life, God and happiness.

I look forward for the next day of morning to come, to do something, to wake up and to experience more,
to learn more and that’s what motivates me to do better in life. I strongly believe that at young age, we
should do a lot with our lives and not have any restrictions. We don’t have any limitations. And the more
you do, the more you be.

But let there be someone, a beauty to serve as a role model, a leader and an inspiration to everyone on this
advocacy. This is a call to all the women out there who would like to share their ideas on preventing
environmental degradation, to serve and inspire the people to save our Earth. Let our voice be heard and
help our biodiversity continue to build its reputation!
