Training Objectives

• The objective of this module is to enable participants to

have a basic understanding on SRM format and to
search through the manuals for information on
composites repairs

• Learning Outcomes:
– Have an overview of composite materials
– Know how to use Airbus / Boeing manuals to look up
for a composite repair

Approved Repair Information

Proprietary repair is available through the aircraft

manufacturer’s SRM.

The SRM is the primary source of repair practice.

If a specific event is not covered in the SRM, then either

the manufacturer or a DER should be contacted for more
information.

Use of Source Documents

There are a number of source documents issued by aircraft

OEMs containing maintenance, modification, rework, and
repair information.

The SRM, issued and maintained by an OEM, is the source

document that is consulted when damage to a structural
component is discovered. Complete typical damage/repair
instructions are listed in the SRM.

Repairs for primary load-bearing and secondary structures

must be described in the manufacturer’s SRM or be
confirmed by a DER.

Importance of using Approved Data, Methods

and Procedures
Repair instructions defined in an SRM are based on material
and processing qualification tests that ensure repeatable
material properties and processes. These instructions, which
are approved by the civil aviation authority, such as the FAA
or DER, must be followed. If they are changed, the changes
must be evaluated to establish the impact of those changes
and adjust the repair accordingly.

Equally important is to ensure that Structural repair materials

are subjected to detail storage and handling instructions to
ensure that a repair will meet the specified design strength,
stiffness, and durability.

Structural Repair Substantiation and Approval

Whenever an approved repair design and process is not

available for a given damage, there are several options.

1) Contact the OEM for help in defining an approved repair,

this is often the most efficient and safe option
2) Is to develop a new repair design and process and gain the
necessary substantiation for regulatory approval. Without
some help from the OEM, this is a very difficult task for
composite primary structures, where internal loads and
structural details directly relate to the surrounding
structures and their design details
3) The final option is to replace the part with an approved part
that meets the regulatory requirements

Structural Repair Manual

• This manual has been prepared to include information,

instructions and data for field repair of the aircraft structure
• It contains allowable structural damage criteria, structure
material identification and repair designs
• Where repairs are not included, it does not follow that the
structure concerned is not repairable

• It is just not practical to

design a repair or service
experience have yet to
indicate a requirement

SRM- Chapters Numbers

• This manual is divided into chapters

• Chapter 51 contains repair information that is applicable to
all of the airplane structure
The Chapter numbers identify major areas of the airplane
structure (the fuselage or wing)
• Chapter 51- Structures-General
• Chapter 52 – Doors
• Chapter 53 – Fuselage
• Chapter 54 -- Nacelles /Pylons
• Chapter 55 – Stabilizers
• Chapter 56 – Windows
• Chapter 57 – Wings

• Chapter numbers are subdivided into section numbers
• Chapter 51 deals with those subjects which are general in
nature to the entire structure of the airplane
• The Section numbers are a subset of the major areas
(wing center section)
57-10 Center wing

• Chapters 52 thru 57 deal with major airplane

components
• (Chapter 57 wings)
• Chapter 51 deals with those subjects, which are general
in nature, it is arranged to allow maximum utilization of
