Multimodal Project

Doping in Sports

i) Why we chose our topic?

Doping is a term with an extremely broad definition. Although doping in sports can be used
for various reasons, the main purpose of our multimodal project is to expose some cases in
which doping has been used against the rules of a competition or tournament. "In fact, new,
more powerful and undetectable doping techniques and substances are now abused by
professional athletes, while sophisticated networks of distribution have developed" (Baron &
Martin & Magd, 2007). This implies that, in today's world, it is very difficult to detect those
athletes. For this reason, it is necessary to report some cases in which doping substances were
not allowed and gave an advantage to those who used them.

ii) The importance and relevance of our topic.

According to Baron, Martin and Magd (2007) "Professional athletes are often the role models
of adolescent and young adult populations, who often mimic their behaviors, including the
abuse of drugs." Athletes are often an important part of society. Likewise, doping has directly
influenced much of the general culture, and it is important to know some of these cases.

iii) The effect we wish to create.

The idea arises from reporting a fact that is not generally considered. It is important to know
how the use of substances not allowed to improve performance or accelerate recovery affects
professional sports competitions. We also want people to understand what the consequences
are for athletes.

iv) Why we chose our specific mode?

We chose to make a video. The video will serve as the main mode of communication to show
what happened in certain cases. As Clarine (2016) mentions video displays nonverbal
communication, engages audiences, and incites action, among others.

v) The rhetorical, visual, aural, and linguistic techniques that we have incorporated and
how we have considered our rhetorical situation.

We have considered that the issue of doping in sports needs to be observed, analyzed, and
communicated to the whole world. Above all, the consequences of prohibited substances are
harmful, and rhetoric will help us convince people that they should be careful with them and
be advised by a professional. Also, the methods used are the following:

 Ethos. We will use reliable sources and an informative tone.

 Pathos. Empathy and awareness on the part of those who made the video. Interviews
with professional athletes will also be used.
 Logos. Competitions data and statistics.
