Course: EC2P001 Introduction To Electronics Lab: Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar School of Electrical Science

This document provides instructions for designing and simulating astable and monostable multivibrators using a 555 timer chip in LTSpice. Students are asked to design circuits based on their registration number, simulate the circuits to obtain output waveforms, and analyze the results. Their report should include the circuits, component values, output waveforms, and comparisons of simulated versus theoretical frequencies and time periods. Proper documentation of calculations, graphs and results is important.

Design Experiment – 2: 555 based multivibrators

Please read the following instructions carefully
Note-1: LT Spice simulation files of the design experiment will be verified and
evaluated, so please save the zip folder with your
reg.no_name_design_experiment_1 and upload to the respective directive.
Note-2: Report your results in a professional way. Make sure that all your theory,
calculations, graphs are properly documented with high quality. Significant amount
of marks will come from the way you report/document your results. Upload your lab
report with the file name rollnumber_name_design_experiment_1 in pdf format
Note-3: Please start your design experiment early to complete it before the
scheduled deadline. The assignment and report usually take more time than you
may estimate otherwise.
Note-4: Any form of copying, duplication of results will be viewed seriously and
correspondingly will be penalized. Every one day delay in the submission leads to
25% reduction in total marks. After 3 days of delay, your submission becomes
invalid.
1. Aim:

Design and simulate astable and monostable multivibrator using a 555 chip.

2. Learning Outcomes:
(a) Design an astable multivibrator.
(b) Design a monostable multivibrator.

3. Theory:
Astable multivibrator:
An astable multivibrator can be designed by adding two resistors (RA and
RB in circuit diagram) and a capacitor (C in circuit diagram) to the 555
Timer IC. These two resistors and the capacitor (values) are selected
appropriately so as to obtain the desired ‘ON’ and ‘OFF’ timings at the
output terminal (pin 3). So basically, the ON and OFF time at the output
(i.e the ‘HIGH’ and ‘LOW’ state at the output terminal) is dependent on the
values chosen for RA,RB and C. Figure 1 shows an astable multivibrator.

Figure 1: A simplified diagram showing the

astable operation
Figure 2: Pin configuration of a 555 timer.

Output of astable multivibrator

Circuit diagram of an astable multivibrator

The frequency f of the output waveform is 1.49 / ((RA+2RB) * C), this is the
theoretical frequency.
The capacitor charging time Tc = 0.693(RA + RB)C and the capacitor
discharging time is Td= 0.693*RB * C. The total time T =Tc + Td and f = 1/T.
The duty cycle can be calculated as:
Duty cycle = (On Time/Total time) = (RA + RB)/(RA + 2RB).
Monostable multivibrator:
The Monostable 555 Timer circuit triggers on a negative-going pulse applied to
pin 2 and this trigger pulse must be much shorter than the output pulse width
allowing time for the timing capacitor to charge and then discharge fully. Once
triggered, the 555 Monostable will remain in this “HIGH” unstable output state
until the time period set up by the RA * C network has elapsed. The amount of
time that the output voltage remains “HIGH” or at a logic “1” level, is given by
the time constant equation ΔT. This is called the on time.
ΔT=1.1*RA*C

4. Specifications
Table : Design Specifications
Parameter Value
ΔT for Astable operation (X +Y) μsecond
f for Monostable operation (X +Y) KHz
Note: X and Y are last two digits of you Registration No.
Ex: For, 19EC01028:
ΔT = 2 + 8 = 10 μs.
f = (2 + 8) KHz = 10 KHz.

5. Expected Outcomes
(a) Determine RA, RB, C for the astable operation by referring to the design
specifications. Include your circuit in the report and label all the wires.

(b) For astable operation, find out he output waveform frequency and duty
cycle from the simulated plot and compare them with the theoretical
results. Include the output waveform and capacitor discharge plot. Show
the cursor measurements on the plot. Plots should be properly
labeled, easy to read and understand.

(c) Determine RA and C for the monostable operation by referring to the

design specifications. Include your circuit in the report and label all the
wires.

(d) For monostable operation, The trigger input should be a square wave.
Right click on the voltage source and then click on “advanced” to design a
square wave. Mention the square wave paramenters in the report.
Compute the on time from the simulated graph and compare it with the
theoretical result. Include the trigger waveform, output waveform and the
capacitor discharge plot. Show the cursor measurements on the plot.

(e) Discuss all the results with proper circuits, component values and graphs.
