Please Submit The Assignment On - During The Class. Late Submission Will Not Be Evaluated. 4 Person in One Group

The document discusses two questions regarding mass transfer processes: 1. Analysis of moisture transfer during clay tile drying, calculating concentrations at different depths and times. 2. Mass transfer of propionic acid from a coated pipe wall into flowing water, calculating diffusion, flow properties, concentrations and mass transfer coefficients.

BKF 2432 MASS TRANSFER

Group Assignment 3

Please submit the assignment on ______________ during the class. Late submission will not be
evaluated. 4 person in one group.

QUESTION 1 [30 MARKS]

Analysis of moisture transfer during the drying of clay tiles was monitored in a specially
constructed laboratory dryer. Figure 1 shows the moisture diffusivity as a function of drying
time. The experimental investigations were performed on clay tiles with dimensions 120 × 50 ×
14 mm. In order to dry the clay, hot air is blown over the top surface at 333 K. The samples that
had an initial moisture content of 20 w% were used in the experimental work. The value of
equilibrium moisture content at the surface drop 60% from the initial moisture content. Given the
convective coefficient, k c is 3.13 x 10-7 m/s and the clay tile is a semi-infinite solid. The
concentration c L in the liquid adjacent to the solid and c i in the solid at the interface are in
i

equilibrium. Figure 2 shows the interface condition for convective mass transfer related to the
drying process.

a) Calculate the concentration of water in the solid at the position of 0 m, 0.01 m and 0.005
m below the surface after 150 min.
(21 Marks)

b) Sketch the concentration of the water versus the distance.

(2 Marks)

c) Predict the concentration of water at the distance of 8 mm in the solid clay using the
interpolation data from the graph in (b).
(2 Marks)

d) Calculate the time for the clay tile to obtain the concentration as in (c) at the distance of 8
mm.

QUESTION 2 [40 MARKS]

Pure water at 20 oC and 101.3 kPa is flowing at a velocity of 0.025 m/s in a tube having the walls
coated with propionic acid as shown in Figure 3. The fresh water is flowing at the inlet
concentration of CAo and the measurement of the outlet concentration, CA can be measured
through the propionic acid dissolution in a pure water flow of the pipeline. Given that the
solubility of benzoic acid in water is 0.02948 kg mol/m3.

v = 0.025 m/s

a) Determine the diffusivity, DAB of propionic acid in water at 20 oC.

(8 Marks)

b) Calculate the Reynold Number, NRe and Schmidt Number, NSc for the above conditions
and classify the type of flow.
(8 Marks)

c) Calculate the average concentration, CA of propionic acid at the outlet.

(8 Marks)
d) An experimental study has been carried out to measure the mass transfer coefficients in
cross flow around the same pipeline as Figure 3 using exhaust gas as the flowing fluid. If
the exhaust gas is flowing at a temperature of 18 °C with a velocity of 0.05 m/s, calculate
the mass transfer coefficient, k’c for the exhaust gas flowing perpendicular to the tube.
Assume the physical properties of the exhaust gas are similar with air and the DAB is
241.2 cm2/hr.
