Recommendation:
1. Pin hole tolerance between 4mm to 6 mm [1].
2. The Padeye thickness should be 1/2" < the
jaw width of the shackle [2].
3. The outer radius of Padeye main plate should
allow about 1/4" clearance between main
plate and the sling [2].
4. A Sling load factor of 1.35 is recommended by
Ref [1].
5. Radius of check = Rm-welding-3mm [1].
6. For open sea a load factor of 2 applied to
BASE
BASE
the calculated static load, sheltered location
1.5 [4].

PADEYE DESIGN - NUMERICAL METHOD

Systematic procedure for Padeye design :

1. Check bearing stress
sp = P/Dp(2t + T)

2. Check shear stress

sv = P/2[2t(Rc-Do/2) + (Rm-Do/2)T]

3. Check cheek plate welding

sv = {P[t/(2t+T)]}/(2pRc*Weld Throat)

4. Check Main Plate Welding @ Base

st = [Psinq]/[(2t+2H)*weld Throat]
sv = [Pcosq]/[(2t+2H)*weld Throat]

5. Check axial and shear stress along a section cutting through the main plate.
If a section is cut through the main plate a (B) distance from the center of the hole, and the section linear
dimension is (h) units:

st = [Psinq]/(th) - axial stress

sb = M/Z
Where - Z is the section Modulus
- M = PcosqB - Psinq(h/2-Rm)

sv = Pcosq(Q)/[IT]
Where - Q is the first moment of cross section area beyond the point where shear is calculated
(taken about the neutral axis of the section)
- I is the area moment of inertia

sv = Pcosq/[Th] - average shear stress

6. Check a horizontal force of 5% of static sling load acting laterally @ the centre of the pin hole.
sb = [6(5%P*CL)]/[T2H]

7. Check Bending +Tension stress with 0.6*yield stress

s = (sb +sb + st)/(0.6*sy) - Combined Axial Stress

8. Von Mises Yield Criterion

svm = [(s)2 + 3t(2)2]0.5 Where - t(1) - Shear stress derived from shear formula
t(2) - Average shear stress.
Under [5] Von Mises yield criterion maybe reduce to above when s2 is set equal to zero

Sheet 3 of 3 Rev. 0 Microsoft Excel Numerical Sheet

However in accordance to ref [1], if the clearance of the pin is greater than 6 mm the stress should be checked
with the Hertz formula.
sp = 0.591{[P*E/(2t + T)]*[(Do-Dp)/(Do*Dp)]}^0.5
Where - E is the Young Modulus of Elasticity

The stress calculated with the above formula should be equal to or smaller than the following references stresses:
For Fe 360 : sb < 650 N/mm2
For Fe 510 : sb < 850 N/mm2
If the material is between the stipulated designation, then linear interploation is applied to derived sb in this case.
