THE DC COMPOUND MOTOR – Cumulative and Differential Long Shunt

OBJECTIVES

To investigate the speed/torque characteristics of a DC motor when the series and shunt fields are
connected long shunt cumulatively and long shunt differentially

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

The voltage relation for a cumulative compound motor connected long shunt is

VL = Eg +Ia(Ra + Rs) Eq. 7.1

with all values remaining the same as previously defined in Experiment No. 5 and No. 6. Eg is now equal to
kφTn where φT is equal to the vector sum of the flux produced by the shunt field coil and flux produced by
the series field coil for a cumulative compound motor. In a differential compound motor, φ T is now the
vector difference of the flux produced by the shunt field coil and flux produced by the series field coil. If we
replace Eg by kφTn and solve for n, we have

n = [VL – Ia(Ra + Rs)]/(kφT) Eq. 7.2

The equation for n still shows that the speed is inversely proportional to the total flux per pole and
directly proportional to the quantity [VL – Ia(Ra + Rs)]. All things being equal, the speed in a cumulative
compound motor connected long shunt will have a slightly lower value because of the effect of R S to the
value of [VL – Ia(Ra + Rs)] which will have a slightly lower than the value of VL – Ia(Ra) in a shunt motor.

Torque will now be equal to

T = kφTa Eq. 7.3

When we compare to the power of the motor, it can be seen that there will be a slight change again due to
the introduction of RS in series with Ra. Thus,

PM = EgIa = [VL – Ia(Ra + Rs)]Ia = VLIa – (Ia)2(Ra + Rs) Eq. 7.4

The torque of the motor can now be expressed as

T = 60PM/2πn = 60EgIa/2πn = 60[VLIa – (Ia)2(Ra + Rs)] /2πn Eq. 7.5

and efficiency will be

% Efficiency = (PM/VLIL) 100% Eq. 7.6

5. Set the number of input ports in the scope to 4 ports to match the number of parameters in
the Bus Selector.
6. Run the simulation and double click the Scope to show the output.

Interpretation

Based on the result for the Obtained data through simulations. The

relationship of speed to the torque when there is said to be zero diverter the

increase of the torque does not affect the speed at all. Also Having a diverter

at 5 ohms when the said torque increases the speed drop. Also, the field

current as observed is constant all through the table data. The maximum

speed can occur at minimum value of the torque. Next is that having a

diverter at 10 ohms. The torque increase but speed drop we also notice that

the maximum speed occurs at a minimum value of torque also the field

current is still constant.

Conclusion

The group were able to meet the objective which is to investigate the

speed/torque characteristics of a DC motor when the series and shunt fields

are connected long shunt cumulatively and long shunt differentially. As in

both long shunts the cumulative and differential the torque and speed for

the DC motor will be based on the conducted experiment which are

inversely proportional to each other though small fluctuations in values are

sometimes observed.
QUESTIONS AND ANSWER TO PROBLEMS

1. Explain what cumulative compounding and differential compounding means.

-It means that making the series winding help the shunt winding and the differential compounding is
in connecting the series winding will oppose the magnetic field.

2. Explain why a cumulatively compounded dc motor combines the best features of both the
shunt and series motors.

-Because when compared to the differentially compounded DC motor it will produce a much higher
frequency.

3. Why is a differentially compounded motor unsuitable for any application?

-Its unstable simply because the speed for the motor reaches a very low level and that may not be for
a practical use.

4. How can you determine if a compound motor connected for the first time will run as a
cumulatively compounded or differentially compounded motor?

-If observe the initial setting and its wiring in that when the connections are in reverse it will run
differentially but otherwise cumulatively.
