Why Look For Business
Why Look For Business
Why this course? How your interest developed, what you have done to pursue it,
how it follows on from current studies.
Why are you the right person? Show you are a good candidate with extra-curricular
work like research, relevant reading and employment. For graduates make skills and
specialties like computers, statistics or business stand out.
Other transferable skills? All significant employment is relevant. Work with data
collection and analysis like a traffic flow surveys is a good example. Learning about
team work, pre job meetings or continuous improvement processes, is all relevant.
Long term goals? Selectors want to know about career plans and how you will use
the knowledge they will provide. If you plan to work in risk analytics for insurance
applications then say so.
Outside class? Keep this brief and relevant. For example the board would not be
interested in your musical preferences, but tell them if you play an instrument in a
band, or play a sport to a high level and want to continue at university.
Why here? Establish a personal link to the college or faculty. It will impress if you
know something about them or their particular programs.
As an undergraduate from the School of Management, I have extensive knowledge of
basic concepts and diverse business frameworks. I initially became interested in
Business Analytics as a result of my social and academic experiences, and I would
like to pursue my passion for Business Analytics in your Master’s program. I believe
that this next level of knowledge and advanced concepts will help me better
understand business logic from a data perspective.
Data analysis has already helped me identify key business opportunities and make
smart decisions to successfully create value for customers. Two years ago, together
with a friend, I designed a program to offer superior after-class tutoring services for
middle-school students in our hometown, where hundreds of companies were already
providing extracurricular courses. At first, we designed questionnaires and conducted
market research to better understand our target demographic. After analyzing the data
collected from local students, we found that over 95% of interviewees preferred
classes with fewer than 10 students. However, most of the local extracurricular classes
had up to 60 students per class. Recognizing the opportunity to fill an empty niche,
we decided to set up an education company composed of small-sized classes (8
students per class) and hired more than 30 teachers. As a result of a well-designed
marketing and advertising campaign, hundreds of students enrolled in our courses
until all of our offered classes were full. At the end of the term, over 90% of the
teachers and students expressed great satisfaction with our courses. This successful
entrepreneurial activity was a major motivator behind my interest in business
analytics.
To be perfectly frank, WBS is my dream school. Unlike London or other big cities, I
believe that Coventry is more suitable for academic research. WBS also has extensive
connections with big companies, which may help my career development in the
future. Many graduates have said that their experience at WBS greatly developed their
business insights and had a major impact on their lives. (UCL is my dream school.
Since London is the business centre of the UK, I will have much more exposure and
contact with global companies, meaning that I can more conveniently collect first-
hand information for academic research. UCL’s career services, such as mock
interview sessions and CV guidance, along with the schools great networking
opportunities, are also very appealing. Many graduates of UCL have publicly stated
that the experience at UCL significantly developed their business insights and had a
major impact on their lives.) As a business school student from China, I can also
share my unique perspective of Chinese enterprises for academic research in class. In
addition, I intend to hold Chinese Salons to teach my fellow students more about
China.
Try thinking outside of the box and mentioning only the relevant things that really
make you unique. Think hard and find a particular strong reason that explains why do
you want to study at this program and college.
Don’t forget to be specific and explain the details, provide relevant numbers and not
just number of words.
Though I have been working in client management and business development and am
a Master’s in business administration in marketing, at all steps I have found my
graduation in IT come out to assist my success on the professional front. The
analytical thought process, cultivated over four years during my graduation has been
instrumental in my success in not merely my academic pursuit following that, but also
the professional career path I have chosen for myself. More so, the logical thinking
methodology, the analytical reasoning and decision making has ensured that I create a
niche for myself. It has definitely given me an edge and also brought to light that in a
business, what matters is not how well you can sell it, but rather, how well do you
analyse the various parameters and find a way to sell it.
Working in multi-dimensional geographies like that of South East Asia and the
Americas, I have come to also understand that it is not a domestic phenomenon but
rather a global determinant and hence my decision to pursue a Masters in Science and
Analytics at XXX University. Moving forth from now, I wish to transition into the
role of a Strategist and I believe that in order to be able to effectively utilize my skills
and find a position in the top management of a leading multi-national, I must further
incorporate into my training the effective understanding of business analytics. My
education and experience has so far introduced me to the various possibilities, tools
and methods but to be at the top job, I must master the same and hence, my decision
for revisiting the academia and embellishing my skill set further.
Ahead from here, I feel Business Analytics would see a marked rise in professionals
from every stream, with a variety of experience delving into the pure science of
analytics and relating their respective experience in the sector. With more diversity
and a wider perspective, the sector would invite tenured and seasoned professionals to
look at the way they conduct businesses in the changing scenario. And when that
happens, I wish to be ready for the challenge.
