Why Look for Business

Analytics Personal Statement

Assistance?
A business analytics degree can lead to employment in many sectors and is highly
prized. For graduate schools entry can come from a variety of academic and business
specialties like behavioural or transportation analytics. Competition for places
therefore will always be tough and an application statement must be good so you
stand out. A well written and engaging piece can be the difference between
acceptance and rejection. Many people come to us for professional assistance with
their business analytics personal statement or business administration personal
statement because they want the best.

What to Include in Your Statement?

It is difficult for admission boards to differentiate between candidates on their
academic results and references alone. It is other information, and how you present it,
that gets you noticed. Our experienced writers always consider the following:

 Why this course? How your interest developed, what you have done to pursue it,
how it follows on from current studies.
 Why are you the right person? Show you are a good candidate with extra-curricular
work like research, relevant reading and employment. For graduates make skills and
specialties like computers, statistics or business stand out.
 Other transferable skills? All significant employment is relevant. Work with data
collection and analysis like a traffic flow surveys is a good example. Learning about
team work, pre job meetings or continuous improvement processes, is all relevant.
 Long term goals? Selectors want to know about career plans and how you will use
the knowledge they will provide. If you plan to work in risk analytics for insurance
applications then say so.
 Outside class? Keep this brief and relevant. For example the board would not be
interested in your musical preferences, but tell them if you play an instrument in a
band, or play a sport to a high level and want to continue at university.
 Why here? Establish a personal link to the college or faculty. It will impress if you
know something about them or their particular programs.
As an undergraduate from the School of Management, I have extensive knowledge of
basic concepts and diverse business frameworks. I initially became interested in
Business Analytics as a result of my social and academic experiences, and I would
like to pursue my passion for Business Analytics in your Master’s program. I believe
that this next level of knowledge and advanced concepts will help me better
understand business logic from a data perspective.

Data analysis has already helped me identify key business opportunities and make
smart decisions to successfully create value for customers. Two years ago, together
with a friend, I designed a program to offer superior after-class tutoring services for
middle-school students in our hometown, where hundreds of companies were already
providing extracurricular courses. At first, we designed questionnaires and conducted
market research to better understand our target demographic. After analyzing the data
collected from local students, we found that over 95% of interviewees preferred
classes with fewer than 10 students. However, most of the local extracurricular classes
had up to 60 students per class. Recognizing the opportunity to fill an empty niche,
we decided to set up an education company composed of small-sized classes (8
students per class) and hired more than 30 teachers. As a result of a well-designed
marketing and advertising campaign, hundreds of students enrolled in our courses
until all of our offered classes were full. At the end of the term, over 90% of the
teachers and students expressed great satisfaction with our courses. This successful
entrepreneurial activity was a major motivator behind my interest in business
analytics.

To gain a deeper understanding of business analytics from an academic perspective, I

joined in a high-tech company analysis programme with Professor Mark last semester.
The project consisted of developing a set of suggestions for a company based on
industry analysis. The company was a main producer of the Hello Kitty brand and
wanted to change its business model from OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer)
to ODM (Original Design Manufacturer). After several discussions with my
teammates, I figured out it lay in the toy industry exactly . Then I retrieved a large
amount of industry data from the database, including industry scale and the market
share of leading enterprises. I even searched for the birth rate in recent years to
estimate future market size, since babies were potential customers. Finally, I tried to
make some insightful suggestions based on data analysis. The market demonstrated a
decent growth in birth rate and a scalar expansion of industry, both of which provided
an opportunity to transform the business model into ODM. I suggested that although
the company had its own factory and enough cash flow, it should focus on fixing its
weaknesses: marketing and sales channels. Mark said that we did provide some good
advice for the entrepreneur.  My involvement in this programme showed me that
consulting was an interesting and challenging job, since a consultant must correctly
identify the problems of a company and quickly find solutions.

My short-term goal is to specialize in business analytics, especially business statistics,

through this Master’s programme. After graduation, I want to become an experienced
consultant in a global company, such as Roland Berger, IBM, or Euromonitor
International. My long-term goal is to establish a consulting company, which will help
small and medium enterprises (SMEs) make the right choices to develop their
businesses based on data analysis. Although I don’t come from an engineering
background, I have basic skills in mathematics, statistics, and programming.

To be perfectly frank, WBS is my dream school. Unlike London or other big cities, I
believe that Coventry is more suitable for academic research. WBS also has extensive
connections with big companies, which may help my career development in the
future. Many graduates have said that their experience at WBS greatly developed their
business insights and had a major impact on their lives. (UCL is my dream school.
Since London is the business centre of the UK, I will have much more exposure and
contact with global companies, meaning that I can more conveniently collect first-
hand information for academic research. UCL’s career services, such as mock
interview sessions and CV guidance, along with the schools great networking
opportunities, are also very appealing. Many graduates of UCL have publicly stated
that the experience at UCL significantly developed their business insights and had a
major impact on their lives.)  As a business school student from China, I can also
share my unique perspective of Chinese enterprises for academic research in class. In
addition, I intend to hold Chinese Salons to teach my fellow students more about
China.

Business analytics will give me a deeper understanding of business and a positive

push towards my future. I am eager to fully devote myself to the courses and improve
my skills as a creative and original thinker. I believe that the educational environment
of WBS (UCL)  will provide me with the skills and experience to become a successful
business leader of the future.
Before writing your statement of purpose you should brainstorm the ideas: this is a
real opportunity for you to show the admissions committee who you really are, apart
from the cold facts. Storytelling became really popular in different fields and
industries - why not using it for your SoP?

Think about these questions:

 What you want to study at graduate school?

 Why you want to study only this degree?
 How much and what kind of experience you have in your field? Is your
experience related to your choice of degree?
 Why do you want to study at this particular college? How can you contribute
to our university and our program? What specific skills do you bring to the
table?
 Apart from work and education, what are your hobbies, interests, and habits?
What are you like, as a person?

Try thinking outside of the box and mentioning only the relevant things that really
make you unique. Think hard and find a particular strong reason that explains why do
you want to study at this program and college.

Don’t forget to be specific and explain the details, provide relevant numbers and not
just number of words.

Don’t be too formal - your SoP needs to be interesting to read.

Though I have been working in client management and business development and am
a Master’s in business administration in marketing, at all steps I have found my
graduation in IT come out to assist my success on the professional front. The
analytical thought process, cultivated over four years during my graduation has been
instrumental in my success in not merely my academic pursuit following that, but also
the professional career path I have chosen for myself. More so, the logical thinking
methodology, the analytical reasoning and decision making has ensured that I create a
niche for myself. It has definitely given me an edge and also brought to light that in a
business, what matters is not how well you can sell it, but rather, how well do you
analyse the various parameters and find a way to sell it.

Working in multi-dimensional geographies like that of South East Asia and the
Americas, I have come to also understand that it is not a domestic phenomenon but
rather a global determinant and hence my decision to pursue a Masters in Science and
Analytics at XXX University. Moving forth from now, I wish to transition into the
role of a Strategist and I believe that in order to be able to effectively utilize my skills
and find a position in the top management of a leading multi-national, I must further
incorporate into my training the effective understanding of business analytics. My
education and experience has so far introduced me to the various possibilities, tools
and methods but to be at the top job, I must master the same and hence, my decision
for revisiting the academia and embellishing my skill set further.

My graduation and post-graduation followed by an extensive career exposure with a

multitude of clients has helped me assess and understand my own strengths.
Throughout the same, I have come to appreciate business analytics as the backbone of
success for any business and moving forth, I envision myself finding a position within
the same sphere of decision makers who determine the tide of businesses across the
globe. In order to achieve the same, I must now add to my foundational knowledge
the understanding of a global economy, the various influencers and also further
embellish my intellect by finer more complex technique of business analytics so as to
gain the edge over the others. And to all these aspirations, the program offers me a
comprehensive platform which would help me review my learning of the years gone
by, teach me the winning techniques and also help me develop a holistic perspective
of businesses. Interacting with a diverse set, I would not merely learn about business
analytics but also get the opportunity to practice it in a live scenario and be ready for
my career goals.

Ahead from here, I feel Business Analytics would see a marked rise in professionals
from every stream, with a variety of experience delving into the pure science of
analytics and relating their respective experience in the sector. With more diversity
and a wider perspective, the sector would invite tenured and seasoned professionals to
look at the way they conduct businesses in the changing scenario.  And when that
happens, I wish to be ready for the challenge.
