The document describes Silma Subah's academic portfolio and includes details of several architecture projects. It focuses on one particular project from her 5th year thesis titled "Integrated Adaptive Healing: A Case Of Center For Rehabilitation Of The Paralyzed (CRP), Khulna". The project involved designing a physical rehabilitation center in Khulna, Bangladesh to create a motivational and healing environment. The design was informed by theories of healing spaces and aimed to promote patients' emotional and physical well-being through interaction with natural environments and permeability between indoor and outdoor spaces.

Duration: 14 weeks

Integrated Adaptive Healing:

A Case Of Center For
Rehabilitation Of The
Paralyzed (CRP), Khulna
Location: Avaynagar, Akij City, Jessore-Khulna Highway,
Khulna, Bangladesh

Site: 1.7 acres

It is not common for rehabilitation facilities to

promote suitable environments for patients’ physi-
cal and mental healing. By confining physical thera-
py to a room, these spaces hardly encourage
movement, revitalize the senses, and help patients
with their recovery. The connectivity of spaces with
natural settings such as open terraces or semi-out-
door spaces, could allow physical therapy to
expand through the building and provide patients
with interactive and dynamic sessions. This thesis has
investigated the concept of designing physical
rehabilitation by inspecting theories of healing
spaces in order to acquire complete well-being.
These theories have been used in conjunction with
the gradual process of healing through mobility and
exercise in order to design a physical rehabilitation
center, based in Khulna, Bangladesh. Thus, a
motivational environment for emotional and physi-
cal healing using natural resources is an outcome of
this thesis.

While the current practice of physical therapy is
typically done in static environments, its applica-
tion to the semi-outdoor & outdoor spaces of a
building offers beneficial qualities to patients
and therapists. Rehabilitation facilities are begin-
ning to recognize the importance of encourag-
ing physical activity through design. In doing so,
these environments promote the positive effects
of exercise on patients’ overall health and
consequently encourage them to participate in
this active healing process.

By removing the walls surrounding physical

therapy and connecting the practice to the
hallways and terraces, patients and staff mem-
bers will participate in more invigorating sessions
as they experience the entirety of their facility
through movement.

The design of the exercise areas in various thera-

py spaces enables patients to circulate from Continuing exercise area of a therapy room to the outdoor terrace, also connected to the
one space to the next, progressively improving
their physical conditions. By placing them within main circulation
the semi-outdoor spaces, patients are able to
physically engage with both built and natural
environments through movement and receive
the beneficial exercise that physical therapy
provides.

More importantly, patients are able to engage

themselves with the rehabilitation process both
physically and emotionally within a cheerful
environment instead of getting monotonous
within walls. This is hard to achieve when physi-
cal therapy is practiced in a confined space.
Therefore, incorporating dynamic spaces within
the terraces of rehabilitation facilities will not
only promote exercise, but it will also intensify the
way patients view, interact and experience their
built environments during their recovery.

Design Idea:

Since the project is proposed to be sited at

To fulfill that purpose, the form of the build-

The objective of the project was to explore special structural system of

the contemporary architecture. Here I experimented with “Geodesic”
structure, which was first introduced to create domes. It is now being
widely used to make any irregular forms or complex structures. Section

Being located in a central attraction of the capital city, the site has its
own prominence. It is basically a small island in the city connected with
a road. As it is surrounded by lake water, the form is metaphorically
derived from fish body and tail to represent all the living species in the
water.

“ARTICULATING THE VOLUME”

Studio Apartment For A Retired
Teacher (Wheelchair Bound)

The main objective of this project was to learn basic

agronomics. The project was to design a studio apart-
ment for person of a particular profession. I designed it for
a retired teacher who has become wheelchair bound.
The idea was to create a free flowing space to ensure
free movement. In order to achieve that, the seating in
the living room was arranged flexibly with the book selves
so that it can be arranged when needed. As a scholar
person, the teacher would have a good collection of
books, which he might want to showcase and share with
visitors. The living area would serve this purpose of sharing
without interrupting his free movement.

gradually transform it into a whole another
object. The transformation would be
abstract and with suitable phasing.

I picked a lock as my primary object and

transform it into a headphone through

Khulna City developed gradually alongside Boro Bazar

the city center from the river bank. Unfortu-

and garbage dump yard. The studio objec-
tive was to revitalize the riverbank and bring
back its liveliness. But only planning cannot
do the job until its maintenance is guaran-
teed. One possible way to make this
happen is by developing the river bank with
a sense of belongingness to the city dwell-
ers. Here we implemented the concept of
