Q1W3: Characterizes the roots of a quadratic equation using the discriminant

(M9AL-Ic-1)
Lesson 7.0: Nature of the Roots of Quadratic Equation

THE NATURE OF THE ROOTS OF

QUADRATIC EQUATIONS

The nature of the roots of quadratic

equation can be determined by the
DISCRIMINANT.
DISCRIMINANT

NATURE OF THE ROOTS

 If the discriminant is ZERO, the roots are real, rational and equal.

 If the discriminant is POSITIVE and a perfect square, then the roots are real,
rational and unequal.

 If the discriminant is POSITIVE and not a perfect square, then the

roots are unequal and irrational.

 If the discriminant is NEGATIVE, then the roots are not real or

imaginary.
EXAMPLE #1: Describe the nature of the roots of the quadratic equation

Identify the value of a, b and c

STEP #1
a = 1; b = -4; c = 4
Solve for the discriminant using the formula:

D = b2 – 4ac

D = (-4)2 – 4(1)(4)

STEP #2 D = 16 – 4(4)

D = 16 – 16

D=0

Describe the nature of roots

STEP #3 Since the discriminant is zero, then the nature of the

roots of can be described as REAL,
RATIONAL & EQUAL.

EXAMPLE #2: Describe the nature of the roots of the quadratic equation

Identify the value of a, b and c

STEP #1
a = 1; b = 7; c = 10

Solve for the discriminant using the formula:

D = b2 – 4ac

D = (7)2 – 4(1)(10)

STEP #2 D = 49 – 4(10)

D = 49 – 40

D=9
Describe the nature of roots

STEP #3 Since the discriminant is POSITIVE and 9 is a

PERFECT SQUARE, then the nature of the roots of
can be described as REAL,
RATIONAL & UNEQUAL.

EXAMPLE #3: Describe the nature of the roots of the quadratic equation

Identify the value of a, b and c

STEP #1
a = 1; b = 2; c = -5

Solve for the discriminant using the formula:

D = b2 – 4ac

D = (2)2 – 4(1)(-5)

STEP #2 D = 4 – 4(-5)
The sign changes from negative to
D = 4 + 20
positive since -4(-5) = +20

D = 24

Describe the nature of roots

STEP #3 Since the discriminant is POSITIVE and 24 is a NOT

PERFECT SQUARE, then the nature of the roots of
can be described as REAL,
IRRATIONAL & UNEQUAL.

EXAMPLE #3: Describe the nature of the roots of the quadratic equation

Identify the value of a, b and c

STEP #1
a = 3; b = 2; c = 2
Solve for the discriminant using the formula:

D = b2 – 4ac

D = (2)2 – 4(3)(2)

STEP #2 D = 4 – 4(6)

D = 4 - 24

D = -20

Describe the nature of roots

STEP #3 Since the discriminant is NEGATIVE, then the nature

of the roots of can be described as
NOT REAL or IMAGINARY.

equations using the discriminant. Answer the questions that follow:

1. x2 + 6x + 9 = 0 Discriminant: _______
Nature of roots:_______________________
2. x2 + 9x + 20 = 0 Discriminant: _______
Nature of roots:_______________________
3. 2x2 - 10x + 8 = 0 Discriminant: _______
Nature of roots:_______________________
4. 3x2 - 5x + 4 = 0 Discriminant: _______
Nature of roots:_______________________
5. x2 + 6x + 3 = 0 Discriminant: _______
Nature of roots:_______________________
