ABRAHAMS ACCORDS AND ITS IMPLICATION TO THE SECURITY

OF MIDDLE EAST
Introduction

1. The Israel–UAE normalization agreement is officially called the Abraham Accords Peace
Agreement. It was initially agreed to in a joint statement by the United States, Israel and the
United Arab Emirates (UAE) on August 13, 2020.

2. UAE has become the 3rd Arabic country after Egypt and Jordan to recognize Israel as a
state and establish diplomatic and economic ties. Middle east agreement normalizing relations
between Israel and UAE has signed in the presence of Donald Trump on Sept 15.

2. Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu and UAE foreign minister had travel to US for the
historical and controversial agreement. US is trying to deal with other Arabic countries like
Saudi Arab, Qatar,Bahrain, Oman and Sudan also.

Implication to the sy of Middle East Countries :

UAE:

 To counter with common enemy of UAE and Israel Iran will be easy.
 The relation of UAE will also deteriotes with Turkey , powerful Muslim country. ( UAE
supporting with LNA and Turkey supporting GNA in Libya )
 To stop / suspend the annexation of parts of west Bank by Israel where as Israel,s
Netanyahu insisted the pause was only temporary.
 The interest of selling of Emirates oil to Israel and buying of Israeli technology from the
Israel.
 To enhance cooperation with Israel in defence , medicine, agriculture ,tourism,
technology, establish direct air links and boost tourism.
 To collaborate on projects that address food and water security.
 UAE, a desert state , relies on imports for about 80 % of its food , and has heavily
encouraged investment in agricultural technology and farmland abroad in recent years.
 Uplifting of boycotting Israel and establish embassay , air lines, investment, trade and
other subjects of bilateral benefits.

Israel:

 Iran and Turkey after getting sophisticated weapon from the USA are hostile towards
Israel.
 Counter Iran by making ally with Arabic countries.
2

 To be strong and powerful plus legitimate by gaining recognition from rest of the Arabic
world.
 To enhance cooperation with UAE in defence, medicine, tourism, investment etc.

Saudi Arabia:

 A long time customer of US armaments provided its air space to Israeli aircrafts but
signaled that its not ready for the deal with Israel.Saudi says it wants impartial, judicious
and permanent solution for the Palestine.
 Saudi no objection with the UAE- Israel deal.

Iran, Turkey , Morocco :

 A stab on back to Palestinians.

 As Morocco Pm said that he refuse any normalization with the Zionist entity because it
will go further in breaching the rights of the Palestinians people.

Arab League:

 Minister of Arab League at video conference agreed not to condemn UAE-I srael deal.
 Norweign MP said that Trump should be considered for Nobel prize for his work for a
peace agreement between the UAE and Israel.

PLO:

 No guarantee that Israel wouldnot annex occupied Palestine territory in the future.
 Ridiculous agreement willnot bring peace to the region.

Positive Impacts :

 Given that the UAE is only the third Arab country and the first in the Gulf region to
establish diplomatic relations with Israel.
 The UAE-Israel agreement comes after 26 years and if more countries in the Gulf follow
the UAE’s lead, it would open a new chapter in Arab-Israel ties.
 One of the major factors that brought Israel and Arab world closer has been their shared
antipathy towards Iran.
 A formal agreement and enhanced security and economic ties make the Arab and Israeli
sides better prepared to face fragile situation.
 Will not disturb the status quo: The Israeli plan to annex the West Bank would have
drastically changed the status quo, which would put them under political and diplomatic
pressure and further putting in peril the two-state solution.
 Enhance tourism, investment ,agriculture, technology, cooperation between countries.

Negative Impacts :
3

 No guarantee that Israel will not annex parts of west Bank on coming days.
 May lead to more violence and hostility as Palestinians are not happy with the treaty that
has nothing to give to them.
 Palestinians and other regional countries havenot supported it so , no guarantee of long
lasting of agreement.

Geopolitical implications of the deal:

 The UAE-Israel deal could sharpen the tripolar contest that is already at work in West
Asia.
 The Saudi bloc, consisting of Egypt, the UAE, Bahrain and others, see their interests
being aligned with that of the U.S. and Israel and their support for Palestine is dwindling.
 Turkey and Iran emerge as the strongest supporters of the Palestinians in the Muslim
world.

Way forward

 Israeli foray into the Gulf has the potential to disrupt the existing politico-economic
architecture India has carefully built with the GCC states.
 Deal will provide large and rewarding regional footprint, particularly as the preferred
source of manpower, food products, pharmaceuticals, gem and jewellery, light
engineering items, etc.
 In the evolving scenario, there may be scope for a profitable trilateral synergy if it is
handled with great care .
