Q1) The potential difference V is applied across a conductor of length of Land diameter D. How
are the electric field E and the resistance R of conductor affected when in turn a) V is halved b)
L is halved and c)D is doubled? Justify your answer in each case .( 3)

Q2) Electromagnetic radiation with wavelength:

i)λ1 are used to kill germs in water purifiers.
ii) λ2are used in TV communication system.
iii) λ3 play an important role in maintaining the earth warmth.
Name the part of the electromagnetic spectrum to which these radiation belong. Arrange these
wavelengths in decreasing order of their magnitude. (3)

Q3) An A.C source generating a voltage E=E0sinωt is applied across a pure capacitor of
inductance C. Obtain an expression for the current I in then circuit and hence obtain capacitive
reactance of the circuit and the phase of the current flowing w.r.t the applied voltage.(3)

Q4)A parallel plate capacitor of capacitance C is charged to potential difference V and then the
battery is disconnected .Now dielectric slab of the dimension equal to the spacing between the
plates is inserted between the plates .What are the changes ,if any, in the capacitance
,potential difference ,charge ,electric field and the energy stored??(3)

Q5) Electromagnetic radiation with wavelength:

i)λ1 are used to kill germs in water purifiers.
ii) λ2are used in TV communication system.
iii) λ3 play an important role in maintaining the earth warmth.
Name the part of the electromagnetic spectrum to which these radiation belong. Arrange these
wavelengths in decreasing order of their magnitude. (3)

Q6) Draw schematic diagram of a step up transformer. Explain its working principle. Deduce
the expression for the secondary to primary voltage in terms of the number of turns in the two
coils. n an ideal transformer how is this related to the currents in the two coils? How is the
transformer used in large scale distribution of electrical energy over long distances ? 5)

Q7) Derive an expression for magnetic field at a point on the axis of a circular coil carrying
current? Reduce it for centre of the circular coil? (5)
Q8) Find an expression for torque on an electric dipole in an electric field? Under what
condition dipole is in (i) the state of in stable and ii) unstable equilibrium. Calculate the total
work done in rotating the dipole from the state of stable to unstable equilibrium ? (5)
Q9) a) A point object is placed on the principal axisof a convex spherical surface of radius of
curvature R, which separates the two media of refractive indices n1 and n2 (n1  n2 ) Draw a
rar diagram and deduce the relation between the object distance (u),image distance (v) and the
radius of curvature (R) for refraction to take place at the convex spherical surface from rarer to
denser medium?
b)A converging lens has a focal length of 20cm in air. It is made of a material of refractive
index1.6.If it is immersed in a liquid of refractive index 1.3.Find its new focal length. (5)

Q10)Draw the ray diagram showing the image formation of a distant objectby refracting
telescope. Define its magnifying power and hence deduce it. Write its two important factors
considered to increase the magnifying power. Describe briefly the two main limitations and
explain how far these can be minimized in a reflecting telescope?(5)
