Problem 1: Factory Warehouse Supply

Find an initial basic feasible solution for a transportation problem using the northwest corner rule. The problem involves 3 factories (F1, F2, F3) with production capacities of 30, 50, and 20 units respectively. There are 4 warehouses (W1, W2, W3, W4) with demands of 20, 40, 30, and 10 units respectively. The transportation costs per unit between each factory-warehouse pair are provided.

Problem 1

Luminous lamps has three factories - F1, F2, and F3 with production capacity 30, 50, and
20 units per week respectively. These units are to be shipped to four warehouses W 1,
W2, W3, and W4 with requirement of 20, 40, 30, and 10 units per week respectively. The
transportation costs (in Rs.) per unit between factories and warehouses are given
below.

Factory Warehouse Supply

W1 W2 W3 W4

F1 1 2 1 4 30

F2 3 3 2 1 50

F3 4 2 5 9 20

Demand 20 40 30 10

Find an initial basic feasible solution of the given transportation

problem using northwest corner rule.

Problem 2
Five warehouses are supplied by four factories. The supply available from each factory, the
demand at each warehouse and the cost per unit of transporting goods from the factories to the
warehouses are summarised in the following table:
Factory Warehouse Supply

W1 W2 W3 W4 W5

F1 13 9 15 10 12 40

F2 11 10 12 12 9 10

F3 12 9 11 12 9 20

F4 13 12 13 12 10 10

Demand 12 15 20 15 18
