Chapter 4: Observation Recording Sheet: Chapter 4 Focus: What Does It Mean To Teach and Learn?

This document provides prompts for reflecting on an observed teaching video related to the chapter's focus on what it means to teach and learn. The prompts ask the observer to choose a video on science, math, or text analysis lessons, note how Bloom's Taxonomy and learning theories were demonstrated, and share questions and lessons learned. For the video on analyzing text through discussion, the observer provided evidence of higher-order thinking skills and noted how constructivism was shown as students built understanding through interaction, while raising questions about discussion facilitation and assessment of learning.

Chapter 4: Observation Recording Sheet

Observing teachers in action is an important part of understanding what it means to be a teacher. Watch the videos listed for this
module and review all of the written materials that accompany them. Choose one of the videos to reflect on. Use this form to
respond to the prompts as they relate to your chosen video. Connect our chapter reading to your observation reflection.

Chapter 4 Focus: What Does It Mean To Teach and Learn?

This chapter is asking you to reflect on what it means to teach and learn. After reading this chapter, you should be able to identify
academic language associated with teacher education, compare several learning theories, articulate the “Backwards design” for
planning instruction, describe how curriculum is developed, and explain our common core standards.

This week’s video cases:

Investigating and Measuring Force and Motion Through a Hands-On Science Activity

Investigating Absorption of Soils

Analyzing Text by Engaging in Meaningful Discussion

Exploring the Mathematical Relationships in Boyle's Law

Reflection Questions Your Response

Create a thoughtful response with complete sentences. Provide specific examples from the
video and written commentary to fully answer each reflection question.
Which video did you choose to Analyzing Text by Engaging in Meaningful Discussion
reflect on?
Share a part of the lesson that Bloom’s Taxanomy was demonstrated in this video because student showed their

negative) related to the chapter in what looks like a socratic seminar. With evidence and support, students were able to
focus and explain why. demonstrate their understanding by citing quotes from the article.
Describe a part of the lesson that The teacher did great by monitoring the discussion but I would have asked for questions in

explain why. besides the same three students that were participating in this discussion.
How is the lesson explicitly built on This lesson is built on the common core standards because students are using text to
the common core standards? And, demonstrate their understanding and standards that they are expected to know. This
how are students informed about students are informed about this particular focus through readings/texts that are required in
that particular focus? Could this be their classrooms. I believe this of teaching/demonstrating the common core standards was
done more effectively? Explain how. more effective because if students were given worksheets to fill in then they wouldn’t be
able to elaborate with each other. Clearly in this observation, the students were more
engaged with this discussion.
A section in Chapter 4 focuses on “How people Learn”. For each of the Bloom’s Taxonomy levels listed below, share evidence of
the level in action from the video you observed.
Create A socratic seminar was constructed by the students and teachers in order to show that the
students had an understanding of the material.
Evaluate Evidence that was presented in this discussion were supported with evidence from text or
personal experiences. For example, one of the students were discussing about a sort of
assessments for students to take in order to show they understood the material. Clearly, the
student supported their statement with personal experiences.
Analyze Due to the fact that this was a socratic seminar, students were able to compare and contrast
their ideas of the text and questions presented by the monitor (teacher).
Apply Students applied their understanding of the text to their lives such as the student mentioning
that they themselves do have to take assessments to show their understanding of the
material.
Understand Students explained why them believe the way they did about certain statements and
questions.
Remember Like mentioned before, the students in this discussion connected a lot of their points with
personal experiences which allowed them to remember/ recap past knowledge.
Select one of the four theories below. Cite evidence of the theory in action from the video you observed.

1. Behaviorism Constructivism: Students interacted with each other by participating in a socratic seminar
2. Cognitive Learning Theories which allowed them to have a better understanding of the material. Students were actively
3. Social Cognitive Learning learning from each other. Personally, I find socratic seminars helpful when it comes to
Theories analyzing text because it allows students to hear ideas from each other. Students bounce of
4. Constructivism each others thoughts and learn different ways to approach things.
Teachers are always learning from each other. Classroom observations are an important part of developing a rich, reflective, and
effective practice.
Share three questions you have 1. Are socratic seminar effective on students? In some cases, there are the same three
about teaching as it relates to this students that engage in the discussion the whole time and then there is students who remain
observation. silent. How can we get students to engage more in socratic seminars?
2. Besides having class discussions at the end to show their understanding, what are other
ways teachers can know if their students understood the lesson plan of that day.
3. Why must a teacher always be the one to monitor the class discussion? Do you believe
students would be less shy to participate of it were being monitor by a classmate. For
example, when I would participate in socratic seminars, the teacher would select a student
to come up with questions related to the text so they would be the person to monitor the
discussion and assure that everyone is participating.
Share three things you have learned From this observation, I learned:
from this observation. 1. When the class activity involved class discussions, students are more engaged.
2. Feedback was helpful for both the students and the teacher. It allowed everyone to know
what can be done differently next time.
3.Students were not judgmental of other’s thoughts and ideas. Everyone was respectful.
