Scribd uses iPaper format, which is a PDF- like document format built for the web, which allows
users to embed documents on a web page. 28 iPaper was built with Adobe Flash , which allows it to
be the same on different operating systems (Windows, Mac OS and Linux) without the need for
conversion, as long as the reader has Flash installed (although Scribd has announced non-Flash
support for the Iphone). 29 All major types of documents can be formatted into iPaper, such
documents in Word, presentations in PowerPoint , PDF files,
documents OpenDocument in OpenOffice.org XML and filesPostScript .
All iPaper documents are hosted on Scribd. This allows published documents to be private or public
to the larger Scribd community. The iPaper document viewer can also be embedded in any website
or blog, making it easy to integrate with documents in their original format, regardless of the file
format.
Scribd iPaper requires that Flash cookies be enabled, which is the default setting in Flash. 30 If the
requirements are not met or there is no message, the display area is white or gray.
Scribd released their own API for external / third party applications, however only a few applications
use this API 31 Their revenue model has gained coverage from numerous blogs such
as TechCrunch .
On May 5, 2010, Scribd released the largest implementation of HTML 5 to date (2012) on Web
2.0 held in San Francisco. 32 TechCrunch reported that Scribd is migrating from Flash to

The company was initially founded on a US $ 12,000 budget on loan from the Y
