PROPERTY OF EXPONENTIAL INEQUALITIES

If 𝒃 > 𝟏, then the exponential function

𝒚 = 𝒃𝒙 is increasing for all x. This
𝒙 𝒚
means that 𝒃 < 𝒃 if and only if 𝒙 < 𝒚.

If the base is greater than 1, the direction

of the inequality is retained.
PROPERTY OF EXPONENTIAL INEQUALITIES

If 𝟎 < 𝒃 < 𝟏, then the exponential function

𝒙
𝒚 = 𝒃 is decreasing for all x. This means that
𝒙 𝒚
𝒃 > 𝒃 if and only if 𝒙 < 𝒚.

If the base is greater than 0 but less than 1,

the direction of the inequality is reversed.
Examples:
Solve the inequalities:
1. 𝟑𝒙 < 𝟗𝒙−𝟐
𝟑𝒙 < 𝟑𝟐(𝒙−𝟐) The base, 3, is greater than 1
𝟑𝒙 < 𝟑𝟐𝒙−𝟒 therefore the direction of
𝒙 < 𝟐𝒙 − 𝟒 inequality is retained.
𝟒 < 𝟐𝒙 − 𝒙
𝟒<𝒙 Solution set: (𝟒,+∝]
Examples:
𝟏 𝒙+𝟓 𝟏 𝟑𝒙
2. ( ) ≥( ) 𝑥 + 5 ≤ 6𝑥
𝟏𝟎 𝟏𝟎𝟎
𝟏 𝒙+𝟓 𝟏 𝟑𝒙
( ) ≥ ( 𝟐) 5 ≤ 6𝑥 − 𝑥
𝟏𝟎 𝟏𝟎
𝟏 𝒙+𝟓
( ) ≥
𝟏 (𝟐)𝟑𝒙
( ) 5 ≤ 5𝑥
𝟏𝟎 𝟏𝟎
𝟏 𝒙+𝟓 𝟏 𝟔𝒙 1 ≤ 𝑥 Solution set: [𝟏,+∝)
( ) ≥ ( )
𝟏𝟎 𝟏𝟎
𝟏
𝑥 + 5 ≤ 6𝑥 The base 𝟏𝟎
isgreater than 0 but less than 1,
therefore the direction of inequality is
reversed.
Examples:
Solve the inequalities:
3. 𝟓𝒙+𝟑 ≥ 𝟐𝟓
𝟓𝒙+𝟑 ≥ 𝟓𝟐 The base, 5, is greater than 1
𝒙+𝟑≥𝟐 therefore the direction of
𝒙 ≥ 𝟐 −3 inequality is retained.
𝒙 ≥ −𝟏
Solution set: [−𝟏,+∝)
Examples:
𝟑 𝒙+𝟏 𝟐𝟓
4. ( ) ≥( )
𝟓 𝟗 𝑥 + 1 ≤ −2
𝟑 𝒙+𝟏 𝟓 𝟐
( ) ≥( ) 𝑥 ≤ −2 − 1
𝟓 𝟑
𝟑 𝒙+𝟏 𝟑 −𝟐 𝑥 ≤ −3
( ) ≥ ( )
𝟓 𝟓
Solution set: (+∝, −𝟑]
𝟑 𝒙+𝟏 𝟑 −𝟐 𝟑
( ) ≤ ( ) The base is greater than 0 but less than 1,
𝟓
𝟓 𝟓
therefore the direction of inequality is
reversed.
Exercise:
Solve the following equalities and inequalities.

1. 5𝑥 = 125 4. 7 2𝑥−1
= 7 3𝑥+5

2. 9 2𝑥
= 27 5. 7 3𝑥+2
≤ 49 𝑥

3. 2 2𝑥
=16 6. 3 𝑥+1 > 81
Evaluation:
Solve the following equalities and inequalities.

1. 16 2𝑥−3
=4 𝑥+2
4. 3 𝑥+1
= 27

2. 2 𝑥−1
=26
5. 2 4𝑥+1
≤ 512

3. 22𝑥+3 =32 6. 3 𝑥+1 > 81
