Sample answers and mark schemes

Task 1
Can express opinions and attitudes in a simple way. Can make and respond to suggestions.

Student A and B dialogue

A So, let’s talk about the different activities here, and see which ones we like. Personally, I really like going to an art gallery.
There’s a big exhibition at the one in the city at the moment, and I’ve been several times. How about you?
B Well, I love photography, but I’m not so keen on paintings. But I’m really into music. I’ve got a ticket for a rock festival over
the summer, and I’m really excited about that. Do you like rock music?
A I do, but I also love opera and modern dance. I go to dance classes, and my parents often take me to see operas at the
theatre.
B Sounds good! And how about the cinema? I go quite a lot – I love films.
A Yes, me too. I’m not sure about going to the cinema for a special day, though.
A No. You’re right. You can go there any time. It’s not very special. How about the rock festival?
B Well, it depends what the person likes, but I’d be really happy with that! That sounds great!

Task 2
Can give straightforward descriptions on a variety of familiar topics.

Student A
In this photo, I can see a desk in front of the window, and a chair, with a single bed next to it. The bedspread looks as if it’s
got some pictures on it, so it might be a young person’s room? There’s a car sticker across the window, so I think it could be
a boy’s room. On the wall opposite the bed there are some shelves where you can put all your things. There are lots of
books there, so I imagine the person uses the room for studying – there’s a globe and a desk lamp on the desk, too.
Through the window I can see some houses on the other side of the road, so I guess this is in a house, too. I don’t know if
I’d like to live in the room. It looks quite cosy and comfortable, but I think I prefer my own room!

Student B
Let’s see … it’s a very light and airy room, very modern. The colours are white and green. There’s a single bed in one
corner, with some cupboards above it, and windows on two walls with blinds. I can’t see what’s outside – but it looks like a
nice day. Then on the wall opposite the bed, there’s a desk and a chair with a light above it. Those are white, too. And even
the floor is white! It looks like a room in a flat – it’s probably an older students’ room. It’s a nice room, very clean and tidy –
but I couldn’t live in a room like that. I like having more colours than that, and I think it would be fine in the summer, but it
would feel cold in the winter.
