Crystalization Lesson - Snowflake Crystals

Students will be assessed on their knowledge of solutions using a Kahoot quiz. They will then perform a crystallization experiment where they add a pipe cleaner shape to a borax solution and observe crystal formation overnight. The lesson objectives are for students to recognize mixtures, demonstrate crystal making, and apply separation techniques. Formative assessment is the Kahoot and summative assessment will be done after the crystallization experiment. Materials needed include cups, borax, kettle, pipe cleaners, and Kahoot access.

Subject/Grade:Grade 5 Chemistry Lesson/Date: November 26th Time:60 min

Stage 1: Desired Results

Lesson Students will be formatively assessed with a Kahoot on previous knowledge about solutions.
Overview: Students will then be walked through a procedure that demonstrates a crystallization. Students
will see in an experiment how a crystal forms while using concepts like saturated, unsaturated,
and crystallization.
GOs: Students will:
Describe the properties and interactions of various household liquids and solids and interpret
their interactions.
SOs: Students will:
 Recognize and identify examples of the following kinds of mixtures:
Eg: a solid and a liquid
 Demonstrate a procedure for making a crystal.
 Apply and evaluate a variety of techniques for separating different materials.

Learning Students will:

Objectives  Recognize and identify examples of the following kinds of mixtures:
Eg: a solid and a liquid
 Demonstrate a procedure for making a crystal.
 Apply and evaluate a variety of techniques for separating different materials.

Stage 2: Assessment Evidence

Formative The Kahoot will act as formative Summative
Assessment assessment by seeing how students Assessment
answer each question seeing what we
need to address.

Stage 3: Learning Experience

Prior to - Gather materials Resources: Cups
Lesson: - Get Kahoot set up. Borax
Kettle
Pipe Cleaners

Introduction:
Review of Previous Concepts/New Learning:
 TO review previous concepts, we will be using a Kahoot to introduce a
fun way to review the new concepts we learnt last class
 This also prepares us for the experiment as we will need to know them to
demonstrate crystallization.
 We will also do a fun kahoot just because we do have the laptops!

 There are 10 questions on the Kahoot quiz.

 The link for the Kahoot is above. The questions cover all the information
that we looked at in previous class.
 If anything needs to be gone over I will do so. Depending on the
information and how many they got correct.
Transition – we will now do the experiment as a group. I found letting them do
the last experiment some got out of hand. I really want them to be able to see the
crystals so we will do it as a group.

EXPERIMENT.
- The Resources needed for this lesson are
- Hot water, Kettle
- Plastic Cups
- Pipe Cleaners
- Borax
- String
- Pencils which they all have
Step 1
I will have materials out on my table. Students will line up to get
- One cup
- 1 pipe cleaner
- A spoon for stirring.

Step 2 – I will ask students to create a snowflake by cutting their pipe cleaners.
*** make sure the snowflake is not too big so it will stick to the side of the cup.
They can make icicles too. With a straight stick, This may be best!!!

Step 3 - Mr. Wanner and I will walk around with hot water and pour about ¾ a
cup worth of water into their cup, and 2 ish cups of borax.

Step 4. Stir the borax until almost all of it dissolves.

Step Five – Tie a string on to your pipe cleaner

Step 6 – feed your pipe cleaner into your cup – DON’T TOUCH the side.

Step 7 – Place in back. To be undisturbed overnight.

Transition – Time to clean up

Any extra pipe cleaners go in the garbage. Scissors away.

Consolidation:
Review of Key Concepts/Point to Next Class:
Make sure all is cleaned up
If there is time we will have a conversation about what they think will happen?

2. Specific strengths of the lesson plan and delivery:
3. Specific weaknesses in the lesson plan and delivery:
4. What must be addressed to improve this plan?
5. How I have grown from this teaching experience:
